Re: Old PC, migrating to Mint. Can I have a sanity check on components?
You don't say what desktop environment he was using before. with a ten year old machine, putting Cinnamon on it will slow it way down, compared to using XCFE or MATE. I like Cinnamon, and installed it on a 20 year old Gateway desktop PC that still has the OEM spinning HDD in it.... it is so slow, it...

Re: Wifi connection to Smartphone Hotspot always fails after 5 minutes.
I have two self contained T-Mobile hotspots that are "always on". Those things will disconnect from the network very frequently, I have to reboot the darn things to get them to sync up with the cell-towers again. it is very aggravating, no rhyme or reason as to why it happens, or when it w...

Re: Wifi connection to Smartphone Hotspot always fails after 5 minutes.
I am having a bit of an issue understanding "exactly how" you are connecting to the iPhone's hotspot. at 1st, it sounded like you connected a "laptop" direct to the phone's hotspot. then a few sentences later, you say you don't want to reconfigure your WiFi router. This makes me ...

Re: CANON scanner "Canoscan 9950F"
that is how I had to get my two Canon printers to work.
reboot into Windows, and follow the URL provided in the printer manual.
once the printer is working on Windows, Mint finds it just fine.

Re: How do I know if I'm ready to permanently switch to Linux Mint?
If I had a good alternative to TurboTax, I'd give up Windows altogether. Like their website that works on any browser? It's not the same as having the Deluxe program. I have a few that I do each tax year. precisely, the web version stinks compared to the features in the Deluxe EXE app that resides ...

Re: Can't go back to windows 10
@MiZoG Very good point in this context! I second the use of sync to ensure writing to the external media is complete. Although, for me, that was not the issue as I am aware of that particular "problem". I use Disks to serve the Same Purpose. you can tell it to "eject" the flashd...

my daughter is a Rural mail carrier, her Galaxy S10e is smaller in footprint than my S10+, and she keeps it in a Wallet with her driver license and once credit card. she was pushing a mail cart from the post office to her car, it weighs right at 1,000 lbs. just as she exited the exterior door, it fe...

Bought a "brand new cellphone" and .....
it is a Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5g very nice, I was lucky to find an unmolested, new in the box, never opened specimen on Swappa.com I like to buy used phones, and my limit is about $300 this time, though, I upped that to $340.00 for a specimen that the vendor stated "has all original packa...

Re: How do I know if I'm ready to permanently switch to Linux Mint?
If I had a good alternative to TurboTax, I'd give up Windows altogether. I went online with IRS.gov and started using their format, it is not quite as friendly as TurboTax, and backing up is a Super PITA, you loose data... and pulling up last year, or 3 years ago, is not at all easy. with MS Window...

Re: Can Mint Xfce be installed onto a partition made by Windows Hard Drive Manager?
well, "free space" and a Partition are two different things. I would advise that you use Windows to compress the D: drive, and then Partition it so that most of the 500gb free space is a separate partition. I am not sure, what the Installer would do if you leave it like it is, possibly it ...

Re: How do I know if I'm ready to permanently switch to Linux Mint?
when the day comes, that you find it harder to use MS Windows, than to do the same job in Linux Mint.
which is what happens to me, when I need to help a friend on the BSOD computer.
I keep the boot drive in windows for two reasons.
1) TurboTax
2) update my Garmin GPS(s), we have 4 of them

Re: Can Mint Xfce be installed onto a partition made by Windows Hard Drive Manager?
Thank you, Mr. Azgl1800. Great! There is hope. Due to the fact that I am not good of computer knowledge and technique, please allow me asking many silly questions. Question about the SSD. Do you install Mint on the free space you made on your hard drive? Why do you have to install an SSD if so? Why...

Re: Can Mint Xfce be installed onto a partition made by Windows Hard Drive Manager?
Actually, the installer will just install Grub on the first UEFI partition it finds, and when you boot the PC/laptop the Grub menu comes up asking you to select the OS you want. It defaults to Linux, but lists Windows as an Alternate. All I had to do was use the Windows Partition manager to shrink t...

Re: My new Canon Pixma G3270 printer won't print from desktop?
the method just mentioned would not work for me, as I have 6 WiFi signals here, all of them use the same exact Password, so the printer has no way to know which WiFi channel to lock onto. the printer will scan all channels though, and will lock onto a Windows PC that is trying to find it. I manually...

Re: My new Canon Pixma G3270 printer won't print from desktop?
Okay, now I understand what you have, same as me. I also have a Canon printer, two of them as a matter of fact. Linux is not able to "see them" because the Canon printers do NOT give you a manual way of using the control panel to select the WiFi channel and lock it that WiFi. They are conf...

Re: [SOLVED] Desktop notes for a fading memory
I failed to comment that Joplin has a Unique feature, in that when you Attach an Image, it sticks to the Exact point in your note that you want it. That was what really ticked me off about EverNote, it always attached Images to the bottom of the Notes. they lost their relevance by doing that. I have...

Re: Desktop notes for a fading memory
I installed JOPLIN from the Software Manager, it works great, I just now, created a New Note, that can be pulled back up using a couple of search terms: USB external will bring this note up, along with any other note that contains those words. you just look in the left column and click on the one yo...
