Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro
Regardless of the distro there are always folks who have problems with it. Most problems stem from user mistakes, inexperience and/or hardware incompatibility. (Disclaimer: I am a retired admin at KubuntuForums who has used KDE since SuSE made KDE 1.0 Alpha its DE in its 5.3 release in September of ...

Re: How is RedHat different from Canonical?
My first Linux distro was RH 5.0, which was in the back of a $25 paperback "Learn Linux in 24 Hours", by Bill Brush, purchased on May 1st, 1998, at Barns & Noble. In September of that year I switched to SuSE 5.3 Both use the RPM, RedHat Package Management system. Ubuntu uses the Deb sy...

+1 on everything you've written, Posreve. I fear my own government more than I fear the Russians or the Chinese. I am 75 years old and in my wildest imagination I never thought I would have to defend the Constitution and the Bill of Rights in the "home of the brave and land of the free". W...

System76 has nice computers. You can build your own, too. My son bought the Bonobo and it is great. Comes with Linux preinstalled. Just tell them which one.

Re: Screen tearing
I'm trying this fix right now, but can't save the file. How did you do this? Having the same issue on a Gen 3 Lenovo X1 Carbon, and I'm curious as well. It appears that there may be some steps missing, since by default the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d directory doesn't exist. Are you running some type of r...

Re: reboot from terminal
My question is, why do I need to be root to reboot from the terminal? Phyne By system level command he means that reboot (and halt, which is a link to reboot) are owned by root. So to use them you have to use sudo <command> and enter your home account password. Some utilities are owned by root but ...

Re: The future Linux w microsoft
I had seen that "news" on April first, so dismissed it as a hoax. Maybe there's something to it, but why all the press about it? I used to run Linux in VPC 2004 and VPC 2007 and used the router for shared folders between windows and linux and what I read doesn't sound much different, just...

First off, I don't really trust the media as a whole to deliver anything like accurate news. They're staffed and run mostly by a bunch of ignorant shallow thinkers. ... Many claim FoxNews is fauxnews because they are not far enough Left to please them. They are the shallow thinkers. Major Garrett w...

Put the term "header" ( without quotes) in the search box, click the name header to sort the results and scroll to where the headers should be in the list.

Re: Homeland Security warns Windows PC users to uninstall Quicktime
I prefer getting my tech news from a different source: US-CERT advice says kill Quicktime for Windows, quickly I agree. Fox News pollutes their "news" with gossip, innuendo and political slant too often to be a credible source. But the story behind the story is that Apple refused to allow...

Re: VirtualBox - Kernel driver not installed (rc=1908)
Perhaps the kernel headers for your new kernel haven't been installed. Search the repository for the header files of the new version. Header files are not needed in the normal operation of most Linux distros so they are not included during the install or when a kernel is updated to a newer release. ...

Re: scientists fear possible planet x can destroy life on earth
Your analysis is somewhat shallow. Not really, I think it's more a case of you refusing to accept the reality, we are putting crap in the air, and we cut down trees which should filter that crap out, we pollute the oceans and stop them functioning properly, so like it or not this will buld up over ...

Today's climatologists have not only forgotten what Dr Ed Lorenz discovered in the early 1960's, that have turned Chaos on its head, claiming that weather can be modeled by "deterministic" Chaos. That's not what Dr Lorenz discovered. http://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/pdf/10.1175/BAMS-D-13-00...
