Caja behaviour

I was reading a lengthy document and I noticed that the fan of the pc kicked in every 60 seconds for about 2 seconds. Because it annoyed me during reading I checked what was causing it and it turned out to be caja. So I closed the caja screen and went on reading for a few seconds and it happened aga...

Re: No thumbnails for MKV files

Well done. Now that you mentioned the solution I remembered that there also is an option in caja to set this value, caja>preferences>preview. Stupid I didnt think of it.

Re: Lid close does not go to sleep.

Thats not what I expected. Bummer. I had a look at the source code for that message 'lid device is not compliant to SW_LID' and it appears to be a warning in case of buggy firmware. Though that computer language is not really my thing this message indicates that it has sensed conflicting information...

Re: Lid close does not go to sleep.

That change wont harm. You can change it back if it doesnt work.
I think there are 2 lids defined.
Can you check that by doing:

Code: Select all

ls /proc/acpi/button/lid/

Re: Lid close does not go to sleep.

Sorry I missed that last part with the screen shot.
Maybe this helps:

Code: Select all

sudo xed /etc/systemd/logind.conf
and change this line #HandleLidSwitch=suspend to HandleLidSwitch=suspend
save it, reboot and try again.

Re: Lid close does not go to sleep.

It looks like your lid suspend is switched off.
Go to menu>control centre>power management and check the setting 'When laptop is closed' at the ac tab and the battery tab. if it doesnt say suspend there, set it so. If not report here.

Re: Linux Mint on HP Stream

Sorry I was very busy. Can you execute this command in a terminal cat /proc/net/wireless It will give you some stats of your wifi and the name of your wifi. Now do the command: dmesg -T | grep -i name-of-your-wifi Do you see anything strange there? If not sure, make a photograph and post it here.

Re: Linux Mint on HP Stream

You may have lost your gateway setting. If you type http://212.238.239.115/test/ in your browser, do you get a page saying "hello world'?
If not what error does it give?

Re: Weird laptop booting behaviour

I am a bit out of ideas. Maybe moving to the new LTS kernel 4.15.0-74.84 will solve this, otherwise try moving to 5.3.0-24 (for newer equipment, non-LTS).
The 4.15 one will be in your updates list. The 5.3 one you will have to by hand.

Re: Hidden files

Dont delete them, you will break your system doing so. Those directories are used by your installed applications.

Re: Weird laptop booting behaviour

Even without cloning, just freshly installed Mint 19.3 cinnamon without windows, goes into boot loop.
Is that using the same disk?
Can you startup with a live usb and do inxi -Fzx in a terminal?

Re: Restore procedure no longer works

Yes, you will have to boot from a live usb. I am not familiar with fsck but I think you should not use it on a mounted volume.

Re: Restore procedure no longer works

According to this (german) link a simular problem was solved by doing a fsck on the disk. https://forum.siduction.org/index.php?P ... 4#msg54964

Re: Weird laptop booting behaviour

There shouldnt be a difference between reboot and shutdown. The only thing I can think of is that something went wrong in the cloning part. Depending on the cloning method you can end up with a reference to a swap partition in /etc/fstab that doesnt exist. In a terminal do: cat /etc/fstab | grep -i ...
