In the end I decided to go back to 17.3 Cinnamon because Mate 18 didnt work well either, plus I like the Cinnamon look a lot more 8) now everything works very well, no noisy fans. alright, got it now! the .bashrc file was simply missing. just copied it from the home directory of the new user to my home directory - now the terminal looks the way it should! thanks for your help! oh, and, no, I did of course not restore the home directory after installation.. was I supposed to? ...

to whom it may concern, just want to note that I reinstalled Mint and now it's working fine using the Xorg-drivers. couldn't fix the problem with the proprietary drivers, so for now I'm living with the now and then bleached-screen. hopefully some update may fix it.. I don't know what else to do abou...
