Re: failed to download repository information

I am getting similar messages when I click on Refresh in the Update Manager - using Mint 19. Could not download all repository indexes The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available, an older version of the failed index will be used. Oth...

Re: ImgBrn equivalent

Although I realise you asked for a Linux equivalent, I thought I would mention that I use ImgBurn v2.5.8.0 under Wine and it works perfectly. Environment is Mint 19, Play on Linux v4.2.12, Wine v3.0, OS set to Windows XP.

My usage is mainly to copy large backup gzip files from HDD to BD-RE discs.

Re: Which variant of Wine for 19.1 XFCE?

I'm running Mint 19 rather than Mint 19.1. However FastStone Image Viewer 6.5 works perfectly under Wine v 3.0 for me.

PlayOnLinux and Phoenicis PlayOnLinux

In Mint 19 (not 19.1) Software Manager lists both POL v4.2.12-1 and Phoenicis POL 5.0-alpha-2. I have POL v4.2.12 installed and working fine. Can I install the Phoenicis POL v5 alongside it without conflicts? And would that allow me to experiment with Wine 4.0 without installing it "publicly" and po...

Re: caution on upgrading to Wine 4.0 bionic

Many thanks for this warning. I have quite a few apps running under Wine - both direct and in individual PlayOnLinux prefixes. When I moved from Mint 17.3 to Mint 19 (via a clean OS install and app migration) I had all sorts of issues with them but eventually got everything to work as previously. Wh...

Re: Unable to print jpeg file at correct size.

Many thanks to all for such helpful advice. I managed to get it working correctly from GIMP. I'd noticed that in the Printer Properties the Make and Model was :- Epson Stylus SX200 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.13 Actually my SX205 is pretty much identical to an SX200 - I think the 205 was a special model ...

[SOLVED] Unable to print jpeg file at correct size.

Would really appreciate some help with this as have searched online but not found an answer. I'm running Linux Mint 19 and my printer is an Epson SX205. It normally works very well for text printing. I have also used the Kover application to generate CD jewel case inserts and these print perfectly t...

Re: Cannot start program from panel shortcut

Just to say that this problem has forced me to revert to Mint19. My issue is with desktop launchers rather than panel but I suspect it is similar. I have dozens of launchers grouped into folders on the desktop calling bash scripts. Some use sudo, some do not. Most use read to pause to allow output t...

Re: How to enable hibernation with swap partion on Linux Mint 19

Many thanks for pointing out that serious error! It could potentially have caused a lot of wasted time for someone. I will try to be more accurate in future. Normally I would copy paste from the actual file but in this case I couldn't do that - not even if logged in remotely via VNC. I guess I could...

Re: How to enable hibernation with swap partion on Linux Mint 19

Many thanks for this excellent HowTo which worked fine for me on Mint 19. One issue I hit was that when restarting from a hibernation, the GRUB screen had a 30 second timeout rather than the 3 seconds I had set. After a little investigation I found that inserting the following line into /etc/default...

Re: [SOLVED] Can't get monitor to run 1920x1080 on VGA

There is a little trap I fell into with using DVI to VGA adapters. On an older PC of mine, the nVidia card has a DVI-I connector which supplies analogue as well as digital signals. So you can plug in a suitable adapter and get a VGA signal out. In that way you can drive two VGA monitors with the oth...

Re: [SOLVED] Can't get monitor to run 1920x1080 on VGA

Having the option of both gives more flexibility if you want to run two monitors and one only has a DVI input. Then if the the second monitor has VGA capability as well as DVI it can use the VGA connection. I've experimented with trying to use my Intel Mobo graphics in parallel with the nVidia card ...

Re: Can't get monitor to run 1920x1080 on VGA

It turned out that the VGA cable was faulty! Replaced it and the VGA input then worked at the 1920x1080 default resolution with no need to amend any configuration files. Perhaps the fault meant that the EDID data was not being passed over correctly. Strange that Windows 8.1 had no problem with that ...

[SOLVED] Can't get monitor to run 1920x1080 on VGA

I'm in a bit of a pickle! I thought I knew a little bit about xrandr and xorg.config but I guess I don't! I want to replace my CRT monitor (1600x1200 85Hz) with an LED 1920x1080 60Hz. I'd tried this with some other LCD screens and found I could edit xorg.conf to change the resolution and refresh rat...

[SOLVED] Mint 19 - switching from VGA CRT to VGA LCD

I've been using a LaCIe 22" CRT @ 1600x122 & 85Hz but am considering changing to a good quality LCD - ideally 1920 x 1200 with the option of VGA or DVD-D connection. I like the idea of VGA as a backup because I know it works with my existing kit. The graphics card is an nVidia GT630 and the onboard ...

I have had more problems with WINE (and PlayOnLinux) on Mint19 than everything else put together! But I have had some success so here's my tuppence worth. I'm very nervous about installing anything outside of the standard Software Manager and I try to stick to that policy unless it becomes impossibl...

Re: Mint 19 and Kernel 4.15.0-30

Thanks again - I followed the link and also read some of the Grub2 manual trying to concentrate on the most relevant bits to me. What I think happens is that when you call grub-install to install to MBR it rewrites the 512 byte boot.img code in the MBR which contains a hard coded sector address of t...
