Optimising for a high resolution screen.

I was allowed to bring a rather nice desktop PC home from work, (it was state of the art a few years ago), and decided it was a good time to treat myself to a new monitor, which is UHD / 4k / Whatever you want to call it. Mint installed nicely, but not surprisingly the actual menus and text and icon...

Re: Installing to a Win7 machine with debris in the boot options!

Thanks for the info. I was planning on installing to the second disk, (if that will work), which has 70 Gb free. The first one is a windows install which nearly filled the disk, as observed (which is why I got the second SSD as it happens) It was not so much the disk space that concerned me though -...

Re: Installing to a Win7 machine with debris in the boot options!

Thanks for the help.

How do I get a screen shot of the partitions please?

And yes, I want to keep both W7 installs.

Installing to a Win7 machine with debris in the boot options!

This could get a bit messy, and I am nervous to expermeint as a mistake could leave me with an unbootable computer! I have not gone near Linux in a long time, but want to try again. I am currently running WIndows 7, 64 bit. When I boot I get the option to use either of two windows 7 installs on the ...

Re: Install has messed things up...

I wasn't offered a choice of where it would go... The PC has a 128 Gb SSD, which was the boot drive, and two x 3 TB hard drives, each of which was split into two partitions, a large one and a small one. I recal something about some drives not being accessible, and an offer to unmount. As Mint is rel...

Re: Install has messed things up...

screengrab.jpg Thanks for such a prompt response, it's much appreciated! If everything goes to plan, you will find a screenshot attached here. I thought it was worth getting a 'my computer' display up too. The disk shown in the GParted display is clearly one of my 3Tb hard drives, which I had parti...

Install has messed things up...

I was trying to install Linux Mint Cinamon 64 bit on my PC. It asked about unmounting some inaccessible partitions, I carried on, but the install failled. When I tried rebooting, hoping to get back to WIndows at least I got no boot message at all, just a black screen. I decided to boot off the DVD i...

This is just straight forward - do it! Save your data. Just remove the partition with feisty and make one partition about 3 or 4 GB for MInt itself and the rest of the space for /home on its own partition. Some would argue that you should put /boot on its own 64 MB partition.... Sorry, I'm a thicki...

Installing Mint over Ubuntu

Hi All, I have a quick go with Mint 3, and was seriously impressed - this one really did do useful stuff straigt way. Many thanks to everyone who worked on it. Anyway I currently have a machine which is dual boot Ubuntu Feisty and Windows XP, and I want to replace Ubuntu with Linux Mint. I'm fairly ...

Hello from a windows refugee...

Just a note to say Hi to everyone and introduce myself. I am still very new to Linux in general, but have been experimenting casually for about a year. I have decided it is time to get serious, and at least try to get the basic stuff I use a lot going under Linux. As I am having big problems getting...

Getting music from my USB sound card...

Hi All, I just got started with Linux Mint - I am still very new to all this, and as I still cannot get my modem working, the idea of trying a Linux that already had the codecs installed had obvious appeal to me. Sadly my initial attempts to play MP3 music have not been sucessful. I think the root o...
