Re: youtube-dl not working

I have tried burning onto CD and DVD the downloaded files which are .mp4 and .webm and this does not work. I suppose I need to get a hold of or purchase a video file converter program. Is there one for Linux?

Mint KDE (Rosa) failed to boot

Hi guys, Have been using Mint now for 4 months. The machine is a Compac with Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3 GHz, 3GB of RAM and using a 465Gb HD. The machine has shown signs of getting stuck half way through booting quite a number of times. I think this is due to the second hand PC I am using. Just now, thou...

Re: Weird flashing windows

Thanks very much. I don't have that neat transparent window effect any more when I move the window, but that seems to do the trick!

Weird flashing windows

Hi guys, I have installed Linux Mint 17.3 on a PC recently and although it is working OK there is something weird that happens from time to time on a regular basis. 1) I often lose my mouse pointer for a short while and drag the mouse around until it appears again. No big problem. 2) When I open up ...

Re: Libre office database problem.

Thanks very much BigEasy, I'll try that. I'm still confused because I've got another Libre office database that has a similar query that works on the query wizard. Like I ma trying to do with this one.

Libre office database problem.

Hi guys, this may seem like a small problem but I can't seem to get a very simple query to work. Is the SQL in this database a universal one? And, if it isn't, where can I get a list of the SQL commands? (not like Access which is Microsoft's own invention). I have a field where the expected input is...

Permission "Forbidden" Vs Encryption

In Windows when I wanted to hide any files from prying eyes (via Internet) I encrypted the folder or files. In Linux I can change the permissions of folders and files to "Forbidden". Is this just as secure as encryption? Is it possible for hackers to enter my machine and read my "Forbidden files? Al...

Re: How Stable is Mint KDE?

Thanks very much Phd21, I am surprised at how much help you have given. I will follow up on those suggestions. This machine has booted successfully about 20 times out of 22. I will get a new UPS as this one has a bad battery and only keeps the PC running for about 2 mins after power shut down. I hav...

Re: How Stable is Mint KDE?

Hi phd21 and thanks, Sorry, I didn't see the space. The Windows drive is a second hard drive in my machine. When I want it, I swap over the plugs. It is Vista. Thanks for the advice about Autocad, I'll give that a try. I have tried "Wine" in the past for other windows stuff but did not have much luc...

Re: How Stable is Mint KDE?

Thanks MOem, The machine is a Compac with Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3 GHz, 3GB of RAM and using a 465Gb HD. Just now I have tried to play a DVD and Mint doesn't detect or mount any disk that I put in the DVD drive. K3B not working

I have used the great CD/DVD burning program K3B before and found it excellent, easy to use and intuitive. I installed it in my Mint 17.3 OS and tried to copy a DVD. After reading the source DVD, and removing it, the program froze and had the message " No Media present" when there was empty media (D...

No Root password needed for Mint?

I've come from several other Linux distros and I like very much what has been done with Mint. It appears to be a great distro. One thing though; I did not give a root password on installation and it appears that the same password used to log into my account is used for root. Is this correct or did I...
