Removed Flatpak, boot fixed

Clean install of LM 19 Cinnamon. The boot process goes to a black screen until I hit Ctrl-C a couple of times. The latest log shows 88 seconds with nothing happening. There are no error messages. I noticed Flatpack was started. I do not use Flatpak. I deleted Flatpak. LM 19 now boots normally, simil...

Re: [solved] Video files no longer playing

I tested mint-meta-codecs and ubuntu-restricted-extras to make MPEG-2 playable. ubuntu-restricted-extras used only 35 MB and made the videos work. mint-meta-codecs wanted to install 135 MB including adobe-flashplugin. People should test ubuntu-restricted-extras first. Ban Flash!

Re: What Are the 5 Green/White Dots During Startup?

This raises the question of how you work out progress when the install freezes. Can you go back to the old Linux command line display?

Re: Installing Linux Mint 19 from ISO, please read

The real problem is that it shouldn't be standard procedure. You should not have to do it but it helps separate out the iso software problems from the problems caused by updates, especially when the iso is a few weeks old. Network timeouts also screw up installs. My first attempt with a spare USB 2...

Re: Installing Linux Mint 19 from ISO, please read

I started again with a USB 3 stick. LM 19 clean installed worked for me with network disconnected. Applied all updates after install finished. Selected the wipe disk option. Oops, forgot about the dual boot to Windows. :-) Only incompatibility is Firefox which seems to use a different password file....

Re: I made a mistake with timeshift and i lose everything /home

File recovery programs vary but many are aimed at the FAT file system where files are marked as deleted by changing one character in the file name. You need a recovery program designed for your file system. When a file is "recovered", it might be missing segments. You start an install. The partition...

Re: Installing Linux Mint 19 from ISO, please read

My attempt at testing LM 19 from a USB stick locked up after one of the five dots turned green. I guess I will not proceed to the install step.

Does the USB stick boot record messages/logs the same as Linux on a disk?

Re: What Are the 5 Green/White Dots During Startup?

LM 19 has the same five dots. when testing LM 19 from a USB stick, the process stopped after the first dot turned green. I was hoping that would indicate point X.

Re: Timeshift and required file systems?

Encryption is tricky. If you use an application with built in password storage, the restore can fail because you lost the password file when your hard disk crashed. Check what is required for a restore before committing to a backup. There are options to encrypt an external disk, or a partition on an...

Re: Timeshift and required file systems?

If you cannot review the source code, you can look at the generated rsync command and the operations log. I used rsync then switched to Timeshift and compared what Timeshift does to what native rsync does. The only requirement with Timeshift was to edit the list of excluded files and directories, so...

Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4.15.0-24

I was hit by the same update and had to revert to 4.13.0-45. The graphics are plain Intel. Nothing else. The update also killed wireless access.

Lucky I had Windows handy to browse the Web.

Re: Linux promotion foiled by DVD drive

I opened a video DVD with no problems. Must be the file system. Will leave the disk until I need another disk from the same source, which could be a long time.

Might be nano technology by then. Drives made secure by the simple fact that they are so small, nobody can find them. :D

Re: Linux promotion foiled by DVD drive

I understand the version change from 18 to 19. I did a fresh install from 17 to 18 and tested stuff. The drive worked in 18 or 18.1. I did not test when updating from 18.2 to 18.3 and may not have checked after 18.1 to 18.2. What I did test were some known past problems with hibernation, sound, back...

Re: Linux promotion foiled by DVD drive

Can you read the DVD in Windows, using the same drive? Yes, I copied the files from the DVD to a USB stick using the same drive plugged into a Windows 7 machine. You mean you didn't even do a "dry run" or "walk through" prior? The DVD was not available when I stepped through everything else. If it ...

Re: Linux promotion foiled by DVD drive

The hardware is unlikely to have an error as it works perfectly in Windows. The DVD might have a slightly different format as the DVD is from a new source. The new source is using an old computer so the DVD formatting would not be that new. I find the Linux regressions strange when they are for thin...

Re: Linux Mint 19 “Tara” Cinnamon – BETA Release

Where would we find a complete list of upstream changes? Today I had a problem with a CD drive that worked in every release of LM prior to 18.3 and failed the only time I tried to use it in 18.3. I am thinking about testing the drive in 19 beta. I thought it might be easier to search through issues/...

Linux promotion foiled by DVD drive

A project meeting. Part of it was to meet new people and promote Linux. ***** DVD drive failed. End of Linux promotion. I use a DVD drive perhaps once per year. The drive worked in every version of Linux Mint prior to LM 18.3.x Usually I spin up a DVD and copy the files to the notebook's disk so the...

Re: OLED low power options

Linux Mint 19 is in beta testing. Several people report better support for dark themes in LM19. This could lead to more dark theme usage on OLED notebook computers. Definitely time for some research into power saving. Some reports into device power usage show a 40% drop in power usage for a mostly b...

Re: Linux Mint 19 “Tara” Cinnamon – BETA Release

The beta looks interesting and not quite ready for my use, based on the notes. I have a second machine I could boot up for testing. Is there something like a beta 1, beta 2, or a weekly update we can test? Would a boot from USB stick handle testing of things like hibernation?

Re: Linux Mint 19 codenamed “Tara”

One thing however: in TimeShift, the users' homes are excluded - so far, so good. But then wouldn't it make sense to exclude other files by default as well, namely /swapfile? It simply doesn't make sense to backup a swap file, and the average newbie probably isn't aware of that, but will happily ba...
