Re: Are Linux distributions really so different from one another?

it does not test the operation from a hard drive

I find the problems are the Wifi chips and similar chips. USB add-on drives can be a problem. Linux RAID a problem. Built in SATA never a problem.

Re: My mom is 70 and is thinking about going with Linux Mint. She's on the fence. What should I tell her to convince her

Windows 7 is like Windows XP, it will survive for a long time due to a lack of a useful Windows replacement. Windows 8.1 is Windows 8 fixed up to the point where it is almost Windows 7 but still has keystroke wasting "enhancements" as bad as OSX. Every other post 7 Windows is a real step d...

Re: Which is better for cPanel Hosting - Nginx Vs Apache ?

Use whatever the Web hosting company recommend. Many are switching from Apache to Nginx and from cPanel to Plesk.

How do LXDE and MATE compare? LXDE works well in Raspbian.

Re: Are Linux distributions really so different from one another?

Raspbian was started specifically for education projects on the ARM based Raspberry Pi computer. There are so many variations on the ARM processors that almost every ARM based device needs a specific distribution. The Raspbian example shows some other influences. The Raspbian developers chose LXDE f...

Re: [SOLVED] Hard drive problem or operating system problem?

Is it a software (Windows) problem Yes, it is a software problem if it is Windows. :-) Hardware problems should show up in the disk's SMART data. I suggest looking in there. If there are permanent errors, buy a new disk. If there are any temporary errors, count them as permanent errors. Temporary e...

Re: Help! RAID M2 Op Sys only Plus 2 SSD For RAID1

Googled "linux HP P410". Found http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/precise/man4/hpsa.4.html I can see the advantage of the controller for many disks but not for two disks. If you use the controller, or skip the controller and use native Linux RAID, test recovery from a drive loss. I find b...

Re: Two Monitors setup?

My notebook has a HDMI socket and a VGA socket. I can run monitors off both at the same time. Some video cards provide both sockets but only let you use one, not both. You could run command inxi -Fxz and post the Graphics section.

Re: what makes xfce lightweight?

I tried Xfce a few times and ran into problems. LM maint appears to be Cinnamon > MATE > Xfce. When Xfce catches up to 18.3 cinnamon, I might test Xfce again. 18.3 Cinnamon is supposed to be faster than 18.2 Cinnamon. I see some speed improvements but not memory reduction. Perhaps more memory usage....

Re: Are Linux distributions really so different from one another?

Some other distros have better disk config if you have anything other than one disk. There was one distro had mods for better audio before those mods moved into Debian. After that, you move away from the desktop/workstation into distros aimed at replacing routers and similar devices.

Re: Restore Timeshift snapshot - which one to use ?

Open up the wed snapshot and look inside. All the files are there. The first snapshot copies everything. The second snapshot copies only new files and creates links back to the unchanged files in the first snapshot. A restore of the second snapshot should restore files from both snapshots.

Acer Aspire One Happy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acer_Aspire_One#Aspire_One_Happy I recycled this a few times. Good battery life and a real disk so you can upgrade to any size. The interface was a bit slow with regular Ubuntu. I switched to something with LDXE or Xcfe then Linux Mint. Smaller or ...

Re: External display always switch to mirrored setting after waking up

Some problems of that type were fixed in LM 18.2 by moving to a later kernel. When you upgrade to LM 18.3, you get the later kernel. I recommend the update.

Re: Failure to switch off when hibernating

Something similar happened on my machine then went away after a few updates. I also switched to a later kernel to fix one problem. Look for startup errors and shutdown errors in the system log. Does your machine work differently connected to the network when compared to Wifi/Ethernet off?

Re: USB flash drive 120 GB ext4

I never use ext4 on flashdrives, since it's a journaling system, only FAT32 or ext2. Journaling adds write sequences, reduces life of flash. Relevant to something like updating databases where an SSD is a far better choice. For file copies, a good brand of flash drive will last many years with Ext4...

You have to delete your profile and start again. I reverted to Firefox 56 while 56 has current securi...

NoScript users will be disappointed with the new version of NoScript in Firefox 57. No temporary passes for third party domains. I reverted back to Firefox 56 to get the working noScript.
