Re: Changing from grub to windows loader

Back in The Old Dark Days we would write the bootloader to the / parition and not the MBR. Then use dd to strip off the first 512 bytes of the partition (would would grab boot record) and put the resulting file where Windows could see it, then modify the Windows boot.ini to point to that file. Of co...

new vid card

Need a new(er) vid card. My current one is a GeForce 8400 GS, and I now have to pin an older driver in place... Other issue is that I "only" have a PCI Express x16 2.0 slot on my mobo ... fortunately from what I've seen on newegg prices are cheap for much newer cards :) So... recommend me a video ca...

custom livecd won't boot - sometimes

Made a custom Mint 18 disk/iso wtih this howto - https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1784 Boots and works fine from VirtualBox when I use the ISO as a virtual-dvd. Wrote the ISO to a USB flash drive wtih the usbimagewriter provided in Mint 18 and it won't boot. Burned a DVD of it, and it w...

Re: Suggestions for Backup Software

I'm not so worried about deleting files as to loosing a hard drive (lost quite a few over the years) So, my OS goes on one drive, my /home goes on a software RAID-1 volume. After I complete my taxes for the year I backup my entire /home dir (several user accounts on my machine) to an external drive ...

Re: Module from old kernel

Ideally you'd be able to boot to the version that worked, check the module version, and go from there. Maybe check kernel config (/boot/config-version) and compare see if different options for the module were used or if it was even an option at all.

Since you are running X Windows, you can also highlight the text with your mouse and then middle click to paste whatever was highlighted. So you have 2 copy/paste buffers... Enjoy!

Re: Can you install Mint directly to a flashdrive?

My students do it every term. The only "tricky" part is writing the boot loader to the flash drive and not the internal hard drive. Also, they MUCH prefer the experience of using a true external hard drive instead of a flash drive/thumb drive - system speed is a good bit slower on one compared to a ...

in /etc/fstab

At the end, add a line - resource mount point fs-type options dump pass

Code: Select all

UUID=3cd8891f-5de8-4ec8-a88d-1b9c539f779e /storage  ext4	defaults 0 0
Then mkdir /storage

Then chown /storage user.group

Re: So I downloaded a video. Turns out it's ISO. How do I watch it?

Not sure if VLC is installed by default anymore these days...

1) Install VLC (maybe)
2) Right click on ISO and pick "Open with.."
3) Select "VLC" from list.
4) Make popcorn.

Re: Mint doesn't know this program is there, but it works??

You didn't install it using the package management system (apt+dpkg+dselect+etc) so it doesn't know about it. Some source distributions come with a "make uninstall" available... if you have the original source directory you compiled from... Otherwise, if it was a binary+libs in a .tar.gz then you'll...

I am really loving this. I am playing on the command line tonight, and learned lshw for more information on my system, which I pasted into nano and then saved. I am having fun and learning as I go. I just wish I could get Photoshop working on Linux, and then I would have no reasons to remain on win...

Re: Linux replacement for Outlook & Thunderbird & iPotTouch

Nope. On my iPhone I use an app called "Files" which lets me upload/download files via a browser interface. It includes a document viewer and media player, so I don't use iTunes, or the Music app on the phone.

I've been using O'Riely's "Running Linux" for the course I teach, but I am changing next term to the "Debian System Administrator's Handbook"

Since Mint is based on Ubuntu and Ubuntu is based on Debian, it should be good to go for ya.

Re: File Transfer

You can download it on the Windows machine because it is probably (99% sure) using NTFS for a file system.

You can't copy it to a flash drive, etc. because (again, 99% sure) it is using FAT32 or ExFAT which have a 4gb-ish limit on total file size.

Re: Need to download all emails from a yahoo account

Set up your yahoo mail for POP access, and then use a mail client on a desktop/laptop. If you use thunderbird it will create a mbox file - all of your messages in one big file.
