Re: Documents that end with ".odt".

So I booted up the disc that has Xfce on it, and surprisingly I could not find a way to change an individual desktop icon (this would be enough of a reason for me to not switch to Xfce). Under the General tab clicking on the icon does nothing. However, you can add an emblem from the emblem tab. It p...

Re: Documents that end with ".odt".

Okay, so your desktop is Xfce. I don't run Xfce, but I do have a DVD disk with an OS with Xfce on it, so I can boot that up, and see how Xfce handles this. I'm also ready to walk out my door right now, so I'll try this out in a couple of hours or so.

Re: <SOLVED> Why is dual-boot not recommended by many?

I have plenty of space, at least for 2 computers. Sure, rebooting is not hard, but when you have to do it multiple times, say in the span of only a half hour or so, yeah, it gets to be a pain. 8)

Re: Documents that end with ".odt".

I'm guessing it should be on the "General" tab you mentioned. You can find out your desktop by running this command inxi -Sz in the terminal, and pasting the results back here (and if you do, please use the Code tags, it's the icon that has this </> in it, right above the text box you type...

Re: Documents that end with ".odt".

What desktop are you on, Cinnamon, Mate, or Xfce? I am on Mate and the instructions RIH gave work on Mate. Do any of the tabs show the icon in the upper left corner? That's all you need to look for, when you find it click on it.

Re: <SOLVED> Why is dual-boot not recommended by many?

I used to dual boot (and had both OS's on one drive), and for my workflow it was a pain in the neck because to switch between the OS's you have to power down the one, and then boot into the other (and it's the same if you have the two OSs on separate drives, unless there is a trick I don't know abou...

Re: Not Permitted To Update

You can download the 32 bit LMDE version of Mint with Cinnamon, and then add Xfce, but I'm not sure how well having both Cinnamon and Xfce installed will work. Sometimes having more than one desktop causes problems.

Like it or not, 32 bit OS's are a dying breed.

Having said that if you would like to dig a little deeper I'd love to provide you with additional information. There's nothing to dig out. Reddog1 already gave the correct answer: As pointed out by numerous posters, it's a failure of the firmware programmers to implement acpi the way that linux exp...

Re: Time to change browser?

I'm surprised (just a little) that this would affect Chromium. What version of Chromium did you try this on? I'm on version 122.0.6261.128 (Official Build) built on Debian 12.5, running on Debian 12.0 (64-bit) and I have uBo installed just fine.

Re: Video convertor

If you don't mind using the terminal, you can use ffmpeg (which probably is already on your system). Here's a link with instructions how to do it: https://opensource.com/article/17/6/ffmpeg-convert-media-file-formats Or, as RIH wrote above, you can use the GUI for it. And it would probably be easier...

I would try simple-scan (that is its name in Synaptic, but shows up in the menu as "Document Scanner"). I use it with my HP and it works perfectly.

Re: updating stuff I don't understand

Or do I really need to spend hours trying to figure out what the heck it is that I am updating and if I should just uninstall it instead? Uninstalling things you have no knowledge of is a great way to break your system. Or more simply is it safe to assume that if it is an update it is legit and tha...

What desktop are you using, Cinnamon, Mate, or Xfce? I use Mate, and in the folder view I have my files grouped by type, but when opening files, in the open file dialog box, they show up there in straight alphabetical order, not grouped by type. Perhaps your problem is something similar?
