Re: updating stuff I don't understand
Or do I really need to spend hours trying to figure out what the heck it is that I am updating and if I should just uninstall it instead? Uninstalling things you have no knowledge of is a great way to break your system. Or more simply is it safe to assume that if it is an update it is legit and tha...

Re: Problem wih email attachments download order
What desktop are you using, Cinnamon, Mate, or Xfce? I use Mate, and in the folder view I have my files grouped by type, but when opening files, in the open file dialog box, they show up there in straight alphabetical order, not grouped by type. Perhaps your problem is something similar?

I just tried it and also got this new thing. I'm not concerned about it anyway because I use Invidious.

6.) Two programs I use in Windows often are Corel Draw X8 and Corel PhotoPaint X8. I can't get them to run under Wine. Are there any alternatives that work similarly? I've tried Gimp, to replace PhotoPaint but the differences are huge. Inkscape may be an alternative for Draw as I haven't had a chan...

Re: SSD and Linux Mint ?
So: the Linux system causes a lot of disk accesses Not sure what you mean by that. I don't think it accesses the discs any more than Windows, and my guess is that it would be even less. Go to Pjotr's guide and set the TRIM function to run daily. That's it. I've had my SSD for over 10 years and it's...

Installation is no different between SSD and old fashioned spinning discs. Is there more to your question?

Re: Is there a way to change the desktop manager to something other than caja?
Caja is a file manager. The phrase "desktop manager" is a misnomer, AFAIK.
If you go to Mate's system monitor, does it show caja running? If I have no folders open, mine shows caja "sleeping."

Re: Should I update old kernel version?
I don't think kernel series 6.2 is still in support (but I could be wrong). If I were you, I'd stick with 6.5.0-15 for the moment. Hopefully the next 6.5 version will fix whatever is causing the problem on your computer. (Does kernel series 5.15 not work well on your computer? That is still in suppo...

Re: frustrated as just installed and is slow
Thanks for the replies, that is a lot of information to take right now as I am exhausted. I read an article saying how to save an old laptop by having Linux in it and that is why I thought this was a good idea and now you are telling me that Mint is for newer computers... You realize that there are...

Re: frustrated as just installed and is slow
Wouldn't Mate use even less RAM than Xfce? Even then, I'd say 2 Gigs just isn't enough. Bump it up to at least 4, and use Mate or Xfce.

Re: Linux Mint Live safer for home banking?
Perhaps having always used Windows, on which I have installed a security suite, I feel, perhaps mistakenly, safer than Linux without antivirus. Maybe it's the opposite but habits are hard to break I felt the same way 10 years ago when I switched to Linux. And here I am, still on Linux, and still do...

I thought it was 8 years, but I went back and double checked . . . and I have been using Linux for a decade now. Time flies.
