Re: Intel UHD 630 "Coffee Lake" support

This is how I managed to get my Coffee Lake UHD 630 working with linux mint 18.3 (64 bit): 1. Upgrade to kernel 4.13.0 with update manager 2. In a terminal run: sudo apt install xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04 xserver-xorg-input-all-hwe-16.04 3. Add the following boot-parameter when booting: i915.alpha_supp...

Updated the first post in this topic to reflect new information from https://plus.google.com/+MarkShuttleworthCanonical/posts/7LYubpaHUHH about Mir: [...] we have lots of IoT projects using Mir as a compositor so that code continues to receive investment. [...] What if anything this means for Ubunt...

Re: Can anyone try to help me understand the purpose of XScreensaver 5.15.3

It works great for slideshows. A nice program. You can configure its behavior. The screensaver is actually for security, to make sure a passerby doesn't use your unoccupied computer to steal info. That is what Linux distros use it for. There is always talk of getting rid of it or replacing it with t...

Re: Steam will run but once I sign in the sign on screen comes back

Complete newbie. Never used linux before. I cannot run steam. I am running newest Linux Mint cinnamon. When I open steam the sign in box comes up, then after a few seconds it comes up again. I am sure that is the correct username and pass word. Have no idea what the problem is. Please help! Recomme...

Re: Ethernet not recognised!

Thanks for the response amethyst_igor. I doubt it's a physical issue as the laptop has not been abused or had a lot of use and I don't have the item you referred to. To be honest didn't know they existed! The key to me is the missing inet address. I can re-establish the inet add: with following $ s...

Re: What's Happened to LM18. Lots of problems

Thanks, But my problem doesn't seem to be this at all. It's a problem of simply detecting internal and external devices, and also remembering shortcuts. Try out Xubuntu. See whether you have the same problems. If so, then Linux Mint is not the problem, the underlying Ubuntu is, or possibly Linux it...

Re: Should I try to get rid of Win 10?

I use what was my old main (spinny disc) as a data disc and boot from a separate (smaller capacity) flash drive. I swear by this option as I think the speed boost for startup and first launch of programs, not to mention moving data around on the primary disc is well worth it. Second off, if I want ...

If the problem is related to kernel compatibility with Skylake, I found a thread that may be helpful.

Re: Ethernet not recognised!

I suggest approaching the problem as a hardware issue. Ethernet port may be bad, cable may be bad, or router. Connect a USB-to-Ethernet adapter to the laptop and try to get connected that way, bypassing the built-in ethernet port. Sometimes those ports go bad due to age and abuse.

Please Allow additional modification of Launcher for Scripts

Background: I am running Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.1 with all updates applied as of 12/25/2016. It is rather nice in most respects. :D I use a complicated script file, regen.sh, to play one of my games, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup . Like any script file, it needs to run in a terminal. If I create the laun...

My Experience Upgrading Linux Mint 17.3 to 18

I set aside about four hours last night to install Linux Mint 18 XFCE over 17.3 XFCE on my HTPC, but then a little light bulb lit up... I remembered that Clem had promised an upgrade path for Sarah, so I decided, why not try it? The instructions -- easy and VERY cautious and methodical. Good....

Disable touchpad altogether, as I did on my Thinkpad with a shot touchpad (same problem as yours). Use only mouse, not the little keyboard joystick. You can easily disable touchpad via the GUI at Preferences | Mouse and Touchpad.

Re: My journey with Mint Mate 18 Beta (edit 4)

The gist of your message is, you have a technical problem with Kafienne, and are about to quit using LM because of that.
This message should be relocated to a technical forum. This is just a chit-chat forum about Linux Mint.
