Re: 32 bit vs 64 bit

I never felt the need to try 64-bit for anything, really, and I'm not a gamer. I believe common users, as you and me won't feel the need for a 64-bit OS... At least not before applications evolve up to a point to favor greatly 64-bit or make them unusable in a 32-bit environment, as it may have hap...

Re: Finding a process or job ID

I'm using Mint 18 Cinnamon and Steam is stuck, not being installed or quitting. How do I find out its process ID so I can kill it? # RUN THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! kill -n 9 $(pgrep 'steam') Process name may differ. To make sure of the process you want to kill run your favorite "task manager" or "top" ...

Agreed.

When I have to recommend a Linux distro for people, especially when they're new to it... My choice is Linux Mint.

You guys definitely are making a good work. Thank you!

Re: 32 bit vs 64 bit

There are supposed to be advantages to 64bit obviously or the tech wouldnt exist... Obviously, there are advantages... But I believe there are areas where the need of something greater than "32 bit" was needed (e.g. servers, other specific processing of data, etc...). But "64 bit" has disadvantages...

Keep in mind there is no trash when you delete by:

Code: Select all

rm -r -f <files_and/or_folders>
Or when holding SHIFT+DELETE, or holding SHIFT+Menu_Option_Delete.

It just so happens that the file you're referencing is executable.
Files don't execute without the execute bit set.

Haha, that gave me lots of troubles and headaches before I learned...

Re: Inserting Date & Time into any text file

I don't know for older version but for the current version of Cinnamon you can add a keyboard shortcut for this. First, install xdotool from Software Manager (or with command apt install xdotool ). You need xdotool for this. With that installed open Keyboard from System Settings and go to the Short...

Nice & Random Wallpapers

I like having randomly generated wallpapers. I made this one and felt I could share with people who likes random wallpapers just as me. Open GIMP, if you don't have it: sudo apt-get install gimp Menu File > New: Set square image dimensions (e.g.: 1920x1920); Click "OK" Menu Filters > Render > Clouds...

This is good news. I remember those kind of software were Windows exclusive (sometimes a MAC as well).

Re: Vi - Is it worth learning?

I believe everything system administration related is worth learning as long as you can maintain that knowledge (e.g.: it is pointless to learn specific mathematics and I don't use it because I have no application for it, then I end up forgetting everything). Still, learning second time is always ea...

You could use a candle oven too. It doesn't need high end equipment like petrol or gas container.

Re: Power outages! How do you deal with them?

Five outages so far this year? Where are you from?! It is normal especially in under developed countries... I think I had more than 5 just this year, the summer (higher demand), my country's poor infrastructure, and storms seem to contribute a lot. Power outages! How do you deal with them? I would ...

I wrote a script for CD ripping recently, you can find it here: https://github.com/7ng3dk/scripts (it is named "rip_cd.sh")

Re: Transfer many files to usb stick = DEAD OS !

It seems to be a tricky problem with the USB driver or configuration... I cannot connect my USB TV Tuner because it will freeze my PS/2 mouse, and when I had a USB keyboard, I connected my USB TV Tuner it caused my keyboard to reset in someway causing the random "num lock" and "caps lock" state to b...
