Re: [Solved] Dumb questions about /root and /home and upgrading

Yes. "/" is the root of the file system.
Yes, all Linux files exist within "/".
The home folder would be /home
If your user name were fred, your home folder would be located at /home/fred

The user "root" (administrator) is a special case, that particular home folder is /root instead of /home/root.

Re: Linux Mint 18 “Sarah” Cinnamon released!

The main page at linuxmint.com still refers to both as "This is the BETA release for...", although the text at the announcements themselves do not, once clicked on. Just thought I'd bring that up. :)

Re: Why Am I Here? My Path to LinuxMint...

I was lucky enough to nab the full set of DVD's for The BBS Documentary a few years back before they sold out of them. One seriously fascinating trip down memory lane, if you've not checked them out before. I'm pretty sure the whole shebang is watchable on youtube, or at least it was the last time I...

Re: Why Am I Here? My Path to LinuxMint...

Excellent read, thanks for those memories... my foray into all this also started in the mid 1980's, although I went the PC instead of Mac route. Many fond memories of that little Cordata Portable, my first PC purchase.

Stay away from subject matter that touches nerves, like these...:

Re: Installing MS-Office 2010 on Wine

I had excellent luck with Office 2007 under PlayOnLinux, which even has an exact option for installing that version of Office. Have never tried it with Office 2010, however. A quick google search brings up many links that say it is possible, admittedly for other Linux versions than Mint, most times....

Re: Need license advice

Sounds like most of the utilities we used to write for the BBS community in the 90's. Ours always looked like some variation of this, but nobody ever bothered to contact us: ' LICENSE AGREEMENT: ' ' You are free to modify, recompile, and run this code for your own use. ' If you use portions of it fo...

Setting up Mint as a media server?

I've done several searches related to this that don't turn up anything particularly useful, so I figured I'd ask here. Let me explain the situation. I have a not-that-old, but slow as molasses Toshiba C875D laptop with an AMD E-450 processor and 4gb ram. It's such a dog that it isn't all that useful...

Re: cannot play a dvd format called TOX-VCD any advice?

A web search turns up that it's probably a VCD (not DVD), possibly created by a Terapin VCD recorder. Another quick search brings up lots of potential solutions. Just type "VCD Linux" into your favorite search engine, you'll get lots of ideas. Or possibly try this: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/ubuntu-t...

Re: hp pavilion wireless and mint 17.2

Here's a dumb thought (I have an HP Pavilion laptop as well). There's a manual slider switch on the bottom of the laptop that turns wireless on and off. I've mistakenly tripped that more than once, first time it happened took me most of a day to figure it out. :)

Welcome back, Mosh. Mine was chipps61, not a particularly active poster, but a regular forum reader. I didn't have any choice but to change both email address and user Id. Glad to be back, thanks admins for the authorization.

Returning user

Just wanted to say hello and get a post in, I had to register a new ID after the forum hack, the email I'd registered with originally in 2010 hasn't existed in a couple of years, so I couldn't reset anything. Oopsie :) Happy Minting to all.
