re: AMDGPU busted by kernel 5.3.0 - fine with kernel 5.0.0

OK, I fixed it, at least for my machine. No combination of kernel, with or without amdgpu, made any change to the tearing. I also had graphics freeze (control-alt-F1 would get me to a terminal session, from which I could restart lightdm or reboot), and occasional total system hang. The fix? update t...

Re: Problems with USB Ports on new 19.3 install

Hmmm... Do you really need to use the rdp protocol? there are other tools to do remote access and management. There was a time I used Teamviewer, but they decided that helping my artistic but decidedly non-technical son was a commercial activity and wanted loads of dosh. Byebye Teamviewer. Nowadays ...

Re: Problems with USB Ports on new 19.3 install

You mention you are using a 'wireless mini keyboard', is that one of those with a USB receiver device, or is it bluetooth? In either case, are you able to try a wired USB (or PS2) keyboard ? If you can boot with a wired keyboard, I suggest trying to do so with whatever the keyboard connects to unplu...

Re: Problems with USB Ports on new 19.3 install

Going back to your USB problem, is that 'Genesys Logic, Inc. 4-port hub' and external hub? powered, as in got its own power supply, or USB powered? What happens if you remove all of your USB devices and plug in just a regular keyboard and mouse? If the errors go away, try those USB devices one at a ...

Re: Problems with USB Ports on new 19.3 install

"I am unsure how I can try an older kernel." Go into 'Update Manager', 'view' menu item, select 'Linux Kernels' The left column will be 5.4, 5.3, 5.0, 4.18, 4.15. Select one of them. The right pane will show you a list of kernels in the set you selected. For example, 5.0 will have 5.0.0-52...

Re: AMDGPU busted by kernel 5.3.0 - fine with kernel 5.0.0

With any of the dozen or so 5.3 kernels I have tried, or the 5.4.0-37 that appeared recently, I get massive tearing and system hangs. The tearing happens mainly, but not exclusively, when playing a video. Screenshot.png Often this leads to display freezing, but if I have a video playing the audio co...

Re: 19.3 Cinnamon desktop locking up

I have been having similar problems almost ever since I installed 19.1, continuing through to 19.3, and this is on two different desktop machines. I even got to the point where I installed a fresh copy on a new disk and reinstalled all my apps. All was OK until I updated the kernel. Mint 19.3 ships ...

Solved: Control key not sent to remote PC from Linux Mint

It turns out that it is a side effect of the keyboard setting to show position of the pointer when the control key is pressed. DISable that function and the control key is correctly passed to the remote PC.

Discussed in: viewtopic.php?p=1777509#p1777509

Problem solved.

mouse setting to show pointer location possible bug?

Mint 19.3/Cinnamon 4.4.8/Kernel 5.3.0-42-generic x86_64 In 'System Settings / Mouse' there is an option to 'Show position of pointer when the Control key is pressed'. If this is enabled I get anomalous behavior in Nemo when renaming a file. With the above function DISabled, I hit f2 to rename a file...

Re: I need assistance with troubleshooting why my Linux Box freezes randomly

I have what superficially looks like a similar problem, however, except for LM19.3, my configuration is quite different. The symptoms are that the graphics screen goes blank, the led on my screen shows there is no output from the graphics card (i.e. same as when pc is switched off). Nothing I do wit...

[Solved] Control key not sent to remote PC from Linux Mint

I have three machines here, a desktop running Mint 19.2, a laptop on Mint 18.3 and a Windows 10 desktop that will soon replace my son's W7 PC. I use the same keyboard for both desktop machines via a KVM switch. Locally the control key works exactly as you would expect.  From all of them I use Chrome...

Re: Disconnect button greyed / can't switch to another user

Your error messages are reporting a DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) issue. This suggests that the kernel you are running is conflicting with something built with specific kernel dependencies. What hardware are you running on? The issue I had was the AMD vega driver for the graphics chip in a Ry...

Re: 19.2 some System Settings windows wider than my screen

sudo chown -Rc $USER:$USER $HOME changed ownership of '/home/john/.rpmdb/Name' from root:root to john:john and many more like it, mostly in .folders, only a couple of my own files. The Applets download tab did say it was out of date, so reloaded it. No change to line length at this time. rm ~/.cinn...

Re: 19.2 some System Settings windows wider than my screen

Sadly no change, tried a reboot as well, still no change.
At least with my font size set to 12 all of the two offending windows are visible.
I am willing to try other ideas, all of which may help me learn more about this environment.
