Re: File System size

It will show free space and total space of partitions and not mounted partitions. It doesn't show usage on unmounted file systems, from the man page: This version of df cannot show the space available on unmounted file systems, because on most kinds of systems doing so requires very non‐ portable i...

Re: [SOLVED] Timeshift - question about config files

it will at that point be too late! No. The standard excludes in timeshift cover a number of folders that the system typically re-creates each time it boots, examples would be /dev or /tmp or /mnt or /media . So no point backing them up. If you haven't done so already, use something like backintime ...

Re: Timeshift - question about config files

They will live in one of the many hidden files/folders in /home/you . In timeshift settings on the users tab on the line showing you check the 'include hidden items' radio button. But this is a bit of a sledgehammer to crack and egg - it will include all hidden files/folders. When you do find out wh...

Re: File System size

/dev/sda16 Why have you got 16 partitions on your primary drive? A screenshot from gparted would help (the df command in the previous post will only show mounted partitions).

Re: UEFI "Other OS" option

You could try gdisk to convert mbr to gpt without losing your data. Not done it myself (and if I did, I'd still back it up), but a bit more here and the man pages are reasonable.

If you do, report back here on how it went :)

That's what I'm using at the moment, displayport to hdmi cable to connect my LG ultrawide monitor. No guarantees that it will fix your flicker problem.

On the left hand side between the 2 USB3.0 ports and the vga connector. You need something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rankie-DisplayPort-Adapter-1080P-Converter-Black/dp/B00Z08KW8C/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2V9ZUEPPT7D28&keywords=mini+displayport+to+vga&qid=1560776130&s=gateway&sprefix=mini+displaypor...

Re: Change permissions for internal drive (non system)

Dump the /dev/disk/by-uuid/ , that's the the crap that disks sticks in your fstab and why I dont use it. Simply use: UUID=c073eb56-b3ae-4641-ad35-b2c49bfa74de /mnt/a_useful_name ntfs nosuid,windows_names,nodev,nofail,gid=1004 0 0 using one of your examples and the UUID for my / partition. A bit simp...

Re: [SOLVED] T440 laptop mods

Funny you should mention that, backup - done, restore - done, now working on cloning (which will offer clone disk direct to disk, disk to file and file to disk, the latter two being for where you can't plug in the drive you want to clone to and have to save to an intermediate destination such as a u...

Re: Change permissions for internal drive (non system)

I will assume that what you are doing is okay (or let altair4 tell you it's wrong), because I've not needed to do what you are trying with ntfs partitions. All I would do is add windows_names into your options = prevents files, directories and extended attributes to be created with a name not allowe...

Re: T440 laptop mods

Short answer, don't know. Have a look at the hardware reference manual: https://thinkpads.com/support/hmm/hmm_pdf/t440_hmm_en_sp40a26000_01.pdf There is also thinkwiki: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkWiki Same question on reddit (skimming it, is would appear that the T440 has a soldered CPU whil...

Re: Virtualbox, Windows 7 USB printer setup problem

For a fully functional VB including usb access you need to: Install the extension pack (this is in mint) install guest addtions (this is in win7) check that you are a member of the vboxusers group (you should be, but check) Not directly relevant to your problem, but win7 does not support USB3.0 'out...

Re: [SOLVED] WebCam not detected on Thinkpad T430 in Linux Mint 19.1

start a new topic It is more likely to get a response from someone that knows with a title like 'T430 -Screen flicker on external monitor'. I've not had any problems with screen flicker so can't help. All I can suggest is that you try using the displayport with a suitable cable/adaptor instead of V...

Re: Crossover and Office 365?

I run office 2013 (word and excel, don't know about powerpoint) under crossover. While you specifically said you didn't want other linux office stuff, if you haven't had a look at WPS office, it's worth consideration. So similar to office that I'm surprised MS hasn't been after them, but it is chine...

Re: Brother MFC-L2685DW printer

I found the easiest way to install my HL-4140CN (network printer) was to download the deb files for the printer driver and cups wrapper from Brother. In the file manager double click on each deb file to install. Do the driver first as, from memory, the cups wrapper has dependencies on the driver. Th...
