I've been running with the same home partition since LM17, so the same configs as I moved through LM's major versions. Only once have I had a problem and it was easily fixed.

Re: Which partitions to use, and size?
1 Do not use Timeshift. If you mess up the system you will have to start from scratch is the downside. :D I know where you are coming from, but I would say use timeshift but you must point it at an ext4 partition on another drive as the destination for its snapshots. WarMaster - your / partition is...

Re: NodeMCU (arduino) drivers not working
I use the esp8266 and esp32. Note - the esp32 is better. #1 - good, brltty gets in the way. #2 - there was no need to do that and to what extent you have borked it, I don't know. The driver is in the kernel. #3 - as above. The one thing you haven't done is you need to be a member of the dialout grou...

Re: How did nvme0 suddenly become nvme1?
Device names are not fixed in linux, it depends on the the order the system reports them to the kernel. On one of my laptops my boot drive is sdc, depending on what usb drives I have plugged in it can become sdd. It is why you should never mount partitions on drives as /dev/sdXy or /dev/nvmeXnYpZ, a...

Re: Backup - app preferences only
Well, sometimes we need settings of a bunch of apps and restoring a whole root partition is just overkill and waste of time. None of your settings live in / , they are your hidden files in home. Most live in ~/.config , some create their own hidden file or folder. It is usually self evident which f...

i5-12400 You will need the edge version of the iso for that, has a later kernel with support for your hardware. Instead of rufus try ventoy, it is a multi-boot solution, once you have installed ventoy to a stick you copy (not burn) isos to it. https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=2389786&am...

Re: Linux Mint on a Dell Wyse 5010 (another thread)
Ventoy will tell you it is not a secure boot platform and then give you a list of the isos on the stick. Should not be a problem.

Mint menu > admin > system reports, system information on the left, copy/paste the output into your post. That gives us information on your system.

Is there a specific feature in v3.3.3 that is not in v2.4.2 (the version available from the standard repos) that requires you to use an appimage?

Legacy boot there is only room for one bootloader per drive so select the drive you are installing mint to as the location for grub.

Re: Linux mint 21.3 SD card speed slow
Lucky you, at least you can read it. When I plug the SD card from my camera into the SD slot in my T430 it refuses to read it. When I plug the SD card into an SD/usb adaptor no problems. If I format the card in linux (fat32), the camera refuses to read it and insists on reformating it. Other SD card...

Yet another vote for thinkpad. I've bought from these people in the past (going back around 20 years - several thinkpads): https://tier1online.com/ You can also buy off amazon from their "trusted resellers" with a guarantee. I've also bought via ebay, cheaper but you need to know what you ...

Shrinking win - disable hibernation (also called fast start) to remove hiberfil.sys and disable virtual memory to get rid of pagefile.sys. Then try shrinking again. These two files can be at the end of a partition and stop win shrinking as much as you want. When done, re-enable virtual memory. If th...

Use the edge version of the LM21.3 iso. Secure boot is broken in the standard iso. That's if you want secure boot, I always disable it.

I've been watching this topic but didn't really have anything to add to the direction axrusar was pointing you in. I'm not a fan of disks and suggest you learn you to edit fstab manually - it can create messy fstab options with un-necessary options. This might get you started: https://forums.linuxmi...

Re: Best practice for upgrading Linux Mint
Creating a "manual" script by taking note of all installed packages and option change is something that never occured to me It did take me about three weeks (not full time and a lot of testing) to generate, and as I said over 1,000 lines. There is a lot repetition, e.g. sudo apt install p...
