You are spoilt for choice, I use backintime, can be automated, I run mine daily automatically. You can't control what time of day. Others - luckybackup, dejadup, homi, borg.
You should be using timeshift to look after the system.

Re: INSTALL questions
In your case home is just another folder in / . That is a very large drive you have. This is what my system drive looks like, I have a separate home partition: Screenshot from 2024-04-25 23-10-56.png Ignore the swap partition, that is a hang-over from the past that I'm too lazy to get rid of, by def...

There is no point, even if you have the partition mounted, timeshift insists on mounting it again at
/run/timeshift/backup

Re: Windows10 to VM
How/why did you create a VHD file? The native virtualbox file is .vdi. You might be able to import it.
Default location for VMs is
The installer should automatically add you to the vboxusers group.
Agree with previous comments, get VB direct from oracle.

Re: INSTALL questions
how do you ensure linux creates an EFI partition on install, and should that be 1st partition and BOOT? You do an "erase and install" or install alongside. If you do "something else" you will need to create it yourself. It does not need to be the first partition on the drive. do...

Agreed, it also adds a lot of un-necessary options, far better to edit fstab manually.
Way back when I started and was dual booting I had a shared data partition, D: in win, in mint I mounted it at
/home/me/data
. Worked for me.- Wed Apr 24, 2024 6:52 pm

Re: Which partitions to use, and size?
1 Do not use Timeshift. If you mess up the system you will have to start from scratch is the downside. :D I know where you are coming from, but I would say use timeshift but you must point it at an ext4 partition on another drive as the destination for its snapshots. WarMaster - your / partition is...

Re: NodeMCU (arduino) drivers not working
I use the esp8266 and esp32. Note - the esp32 is better. #1 - good, brltty gets in the way. #2 - there was no need to do that and to what extent you have borked it, I don't know. The driver is in the kernel. #3 - as above. The one thing you haven't done is you need to be a member of the dialout grou...

Re: How did nvme0 suddenly become nvme1?
Device names are not fixed in linux, it depends on the the order the system reports them to the kernel. On one of my laptops my boot drive is sdc, depending on what usb drives I have plugged in it can become sdd. It is why you should never mount partitions on drives as /dev/sdXy or /dev/nvmeXnYpZ, a...

Re: Backup - app preferences only
Well, sometimes we need settings of a bunch of apps and restoring a whole root partition is just overkill and waste of time. None of your settings live in / , they are your hidden files in home. Most live in ~/.config , some create their own hidden file or folder. It is usually self evident which f...

i5-12400 You will need the edge version of the iso for that, has a later kernel with support for your hardware. Instead of rufus try ventoy, it is a multi-boot solution, once you have installed ventoy to a stick you copy (not burn) isos to it. https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=2389786&am...

Re: Linux Mint on a Dell Wyse 5010 (another thread)
Ventoy will tell you it is not a secure boot platform and then give you a list of the isos on the stick. Should not be a problem.
