Re: Best practice for upgrading Linux Mint

When I was booting from a 240GB SSD I had / at 30GiB, now I boot from a 1TB nvme and / is 40GiB, currently showing 23GiB used with a lot installed but no flatpaks.

Re: Some curious data regarding hard drive stats

Size, taking Kdiskmark as an example - something I would use rarely and it wants 2.5GB drive space. Yes, I know subsequent flatpaks require less. I'm running on a 40GiB / partition so I keep an eye on it. I'm also a bit of a luddite, debs, additional repos and ppas work for me, why change.

Re: Flatpak and deb apps don't follow set dark theme colors in some Windows

I know backintime uses QT, I think virtualbox uses it and I think vscode uses electron. You can google "does x use QT" and/or play around with QT5 settings and see if it makes a difference: Screenshot from 2024-04-19 12-58-55.png This will affect any QT application installed from deb, so r...

Re: Fan control on MSI laptop

It does work with something I pulled from github: https://github.com/dmitry-s93/MControlCenter I had to disable secure boot to make this work. However, I would like to make it work without random "3rd party" software from github, and I wonder if there might be something I didn't try yet? ...

Re: “Failed to open \EFI\BOOT\mmx64.efi - Not Found”

I don't believe this has anything to do with multi-media codecs. I have never had a problem with them during install and don't believe "this issue is fairly common". What are your sources that indicate this is common? Failed to load image Failed to start MokManager: Not Found Suggests an i...

Re: Do I need to turn off BitLocker to install Linux?

With bitlocker enabled you will not get the option to "install alongside" win. The installer does not understand bitlocker, you need to use win's disk management utility to shrink C: and leave the space unallocated. Then you will get the "install alongside" option. With bitlocker...

Just checked, Kdiskmark is in software manager, but a flatpak, so it won't get installed in my system.

Re: Best virtual machine for Linux development

I use VirtualBox. It has its' quirks, but I understand how to use it & am happy with the results I get. Same, I know how to use it, comfortable. If I were starting again I might go down the qemu/kvm route based on it being faster, but I'm not starting again. Another alternative is VMware. I did...

Re: Best practice for upgrading Linux Mint

I have always done a fresh install on a major version change. I also have a separate home partition so get to keep all my configs and data. I make sure I have backups before I start - image backup with foxclone and I have timeshift & backintime running daily automatically. I keep notes - every t...

Re: [SOLVED] HDD Storage Mounted Poorly?

I did tell you that was only for win filesystems, but the best learning is by making mistakes and that one will stick. You can now consider yourself fluent in fstab or at least semi-literate :)

Re: Adding menuentry lines into Linux Mint GRUB

Legacy = the old way of installing/booting systems (dates back to the 1980's), UEFI = the new way (since about 2010). Doesn't matter which distro, linux installs in the same mode your install stick boots in. So you need to boot your fedora install stick in UEFI mode. To do that, disable the CSM flag...

Re: Adding menuentry lines into Linux Mint GRUB

Based on your last posts I can explain it. OS-prober (used by grub) will only find other OS installed in the same mode. Win is installed in UEFI mode: path \EFI\MICROSOFT\BOOT\BOOTMGFW.EFI Both fedora and mint are installed in legacy mode, but... With LM21 when you install in legacy mode, it also cr...

Re: Issue while booting up

What MiZoG has suggested will work, but requires you to use a terminal text editor (sudoedit). You might find it more comfortable to use a GUI text editor. When you have mounted your / partition ( sudo mount /dev/sda4 /media/myborkedsystem ), open your file manager (nemo if cinnamon), navigate to /m...

Re: HDD Storage Mounted Poorly?

Excuse me if my post was ambiguously worded. The drive IS mounted at /mnt. Would it be advisable to create a new mount point mnt/USER and remount the drive at that mount point? Yes, if you add further drives/partitions and want to mount them in /mnt . In linux you can mount partitions anywhere you ...

Re: Adding menuentry lines into Linux Mint GRUB

It sounds like all three OS are booting legacy. You can confirm in mint/fedora with efibootmgr . If it says EFI variables are not supported it is legacy, anything else is UEFI. In win I think msinfo32 tells you. I'm speculating, but you are booting fedora off a drive with a gpt partition table and a...
