Re: [solved] after update boots to garbled then blank screen
SOLVED! I reinstalled Mint and the same problem persisted. Then I tried a third monitor/display also with the same DP to HDMI adaptor and HDMI-cable as before, and now it displayed correctly. My fault was: I was not aware a EDID "dialogue" between PC and display existed. The last (third) ...

Re: AMD Stoney + Kernel 6.5 remains in 640x480(4:3) resolution
Solved! Thank you for the help! I know very well what a DID is, but was not aware that an EDID "dialogue" was between PC and monitor. :? I tried a third monitor, also with the same HDMI-cable and DP-adaptor as before, and then it booted up correctly in 1920 x 1080! lisa@lisa-ThinkCentre-M...

[SOLVED] AMD Stoney + Kernel 6.5 remains in 640x480(4:3) resolution
Had an unsurmountable problem with garbled graphics after mint update. Tried a fresh install of latest Mint with Kernel 6.5 on my Thinkcentre M625Q with AMD E2-9000e stoney. Fresh install was unsuccessful. The problem: Graphic resolution is 640x480(4:3) Can not be changed via "Preferences/Displ...

[solved] after update boots to garbled then blank screen
SMG, thanks again for the reply. When doing as you wrote, it did not come up with the normal grub menu, but instead came up with something else grub related. Pushing "tab" key on the keyboard showed half a page full of unknown desktop commands. Too much for me, I do not understand anything...

Re: after update boots to garbled then blank screen
SMG, thanks for the reply. It seems this is exactly the problem.
Unfortunately I can not update the kernel, because the screen goes garbled and blank so quickly, there is no chance of getting to the update manager. I fear the computer may be bricked!

[solved] after update boots to garbled then blank screen
Hi folks. Here is a lenovo thin client thinkcentre m625q, with AMD E2-9000e, 4GB RAM, 32GB M2 and AMD graphics. For about one year it was mainly used for watching TV, and it worked well. The thin client has a display port, in that is an adapter to HDMI and a HDMI cable goes into the TV. Audio is con...

Re: After 21.3 upgrade my PCs have been compromised
Had my firefox browser hijacked a few times over the past decade. Meanwhile I learnt a lot and it hasn't happened recently any more. Could be that? To avoid such problems, there are various means to "harden" FF, such as to erase all cookies when logoff, not to store passwords or anything e...

Re: Removing Intel Optane Memory to install Mint
Good grief! My deepest sympathy if it can't be removed or deactivated!
Is that Intel Optane generally found in a certain brand, is it restricted to laptops, or mainly in a certain model year?

Re: Removing Intel Optane Memory to install Mint
I have no idea how to remove it, but can't you simply install Mint by telling the installer to use the correct partition?

Re: Are Kernel Updates Really Necessary?
The title of this thread is " Are KERNEL updates really necessary". Several opinions have been voiced, all of them worthwhile readings. Please observe: Browsers are common to practically all desktops, Linux and Windows alike. They are most commonly targeted and easily hijacked! Nothing unu...

Re: Best file system for USB Stick?
@ MIZoG I have formatted two different USB sticks from different makers, one 1TB and the other 500GB. They were both formatted in EXT4. Both could not be recognized by the same computer afterwards. For this I used the Mint USB Formatter that comes with the regular Mint installation. Both USB-sticks ...

Re: Best file system for USB Stick?
I understand exFAT is the most common, but is it the best suited? Isn't EXT4 better? Why am I getting error messages if it is formatted EXT4, but none if formatted in exFAT?

Best file system for USB Stick?
I wonder what the best file system for formatting a USB stick is. Here is what happens: When I format it with the USB stick formatter tool, there is this choice of these file systems: FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, EXT4 After formatting with EXT4 my 537GB USB3 stick can not be opened. Inserting it into the PC ...

Re: How to re-install Mint and wipe hard drive
I would first get my encrypted data off that drive and secure it elsewhere. Make sure all your data is there in you own hands and nothing is missing before you continue. After that, you could simply use gparted, which you probably have on that laptop right now or otherwise from the live installer, a...

Re: [SOLVED] UEFI and Legacy mixed? Dual-Boot problem
@ linux-rox I had changed it to legacy mode in the Dell BIOS, selected "OK" and it booted. Presumably it booted in UEFI mode. Maybe I should have chosen "Legacy" and then "save" instead of choosing "OK" on the BIOS screen. @ Jo-con-El: Thanks for your insight ...

Thanks MiZoG. I don't know how the bloody heck this happened. Would be glad to know how it happened in order to prevent a repeat. Been trying for two solid days to fix it, and tearing hair deosn't help. Inspired by another thread, I booted Mint in Legacy mode and tried " sudo update-grub" ...

[SOLVED] UEFI and Legacy mixed? Dual-Boot problem
Boot problem on dual-boot system Hi folks, this dual-boot machine was working fine without problems for ages, but now booting is messed up. This dual-boot box has two drives. Them being sda for Mint, and sdb for Windows. It boots like this: With both sda(Mint) and sdb(Windows) connected, BIOS set to...

Re: Filters I did not set !
Just a suggestion. If you are a campaigner / activist and get tons and tons of mail, you might want to use a txt-only mail programme. That saves you from a lot of spam, junk, bloated mails, etc. because it only shows text and not the other pretty bloaty stuff. Perhaps you might want to look at Claws...
