SOLVED Re: Mint so terribly slow, 500 000 zeroByte files in folder...?!!!

How it was solved:
Ran Mint from DVD, then erased the file.
It was not possible to delete it with the HDD-installed OS running.

Re: Mint so terribly slow, 500 000 zeroByte files in folder...?!!!

Thanks very much indeed, Catweazel!
Now how do I run fsck utility on my UNmounted file systems? Maybe from a DVD-booted system?
Any suggestion how to get rid of the un-deletable folder contents?

@ Mute Ant: No Bleachbit. Told it does some crazy things, so its not installed.

SOLVED Mint so terribly slow, 500 000 zeroByte files in folder...?!!!

Hi folks, this occured on my own PC, and also on a workmate's. One is running Mint 17.2, the other 17.3 and both in MATE. Both PC's are dual boot Windoze7/Mint. A.) The computer at work was becoming slower and slower from day to day. The hard disk was running and running more and more, coinciding wi...

Re: Remove Mageia and install Mint 17.2

I think of Mageia as something somewhere in between Fedora and Mint. I had it on my Toshiba NB500 notebook when Mint did not yet support the Fn buttons and CedarView gfx properly. In Magaia, look at your partitions and write the details on paper. Do all your backups onto an external medium, and dont...

Yes, nothing on the Keyboard works on boot except the "Enter-key".
Thanks again, WharfRat!
Do you have a larger pic of the Linux window-washer? Really like that!

Re: No boot choice possible

Thanks, Pjotr have just installed the most recent BIOS, but that didn't solve the problem. I think I shall just have to get rid of Windoze completely and give up on solving this matter. After all, I'm almost always in Mint. I'm really fed up with all that Windows fuss and crap and all the other crap...

It has Dell BIOS, nothing like "legacy support" there.

No boot choice possible

Hello folks, I have a dual-boot arrangement, Vista and Mint 17.2. in 64bit mode. Keyboard and mouse are USB connected, no PS/2 on this box. PC is Dell Optiplex 760. The Problem: The initial bootloader screen does not let me choose from what is displayed, because at that stage of boot, only the "ente...

Permissions nightmare

Hi folks, here is what happened first: The old computer went broke, so I got a new replacement plus a new hard drive and successfully installed Mint. On the brand new drive "sda" I created a partion called "share". Then I took both drives from the broken box, and put them into the new one, as sdb an...

Re: Mint 13 on Toshiba: brightness control no longer works

Thanks, Bekk, That workaround works for a few minutes at best BUT after some time the brightness reverts to full blast without any obvious cause. I have therefore systematically downloaded all versions of Mint, one by one, and tried each out, but none resolved this problem. Then I downloaded the mos...

Re: Mint 13 on Toshiba: brightness control no longer works

Thanks Black Veils, but it didn't have the desired effect.
After doing that the only mode of adjusting brightness (control centre / Powermgmt) did not work any more. FN didn't work either.
So I reverted the procedure and it is like before.

Re: Mint 13 on Toshiba: brightness control no longer works

Hmmm... Someone edited this thread, and the previous posts of one year before with all the relevant data are now all missing, and my top post was the continuation... Gone! So let me summarize from memory. One year ago, the same thing as described in the first post happened. Some dear person mentione...

Mint 13 on Toshiba: brightness control no longer works

UPDATE one year later and new problems: The same Notebook as above, Toshiba NB520 with Cedarview graphics, worked perfectly for one year with Mint13 Mate 32bit after the intial problems were solved, but suddenly not any more! After a regular Mint 13 update, the brightness control does not work any ...

SOLVED: update manager not working properly in Mint13 LTS

Thank you all for the help! Problem solved like this: My intent was to solve the updatemanager problem in Mint 13 LTS, and that without opening the door to a plethora of backports. If I would have simply ticked "backported packages" in " Update manager / Edit software sources", it would have solved ...

Re: Why does Linux Mint not work as touted by the gurus

At crossroads: I would just like to add my 5 cents to this, because my situation was very similar to yours, although I am probably one of the least IT-capable users this world has seen. I have successfully switched from Win2000 to Mint years ago, and do not regret it whatsoever. If I really need to ...

Re: update manager not working properly

Hallo Karlchen, have two boxes in front of me right now. Both have been updated by manually starting the updater. Both have thus been updated, but the both have mintUpdater 4.4.7 installed. In the light of recent revelations, that would mean everyone using Mint 13 should frequently check for updates...
