Re: Nerdy types dismissing Linux Mint.

I just overwrote my latest Arch installation with Win 8 (ugh). Couldn't remember the password, that's how long it's been since I used it. "Oh, no... He's gone to the dark side.." (joking) I recently bought this Lenovo laptop. Had 2 options, Win7 or Win10 (I wont entertain 10 at all). Straight out o...

Re: When did you come to Linux?

+1

A little makeover would be nice.. Main thing is that its functional, no watermarks and does what you want, without emptying your pocket book..

Re: When did you come to Linux?

With Windoze you have to purchase useful apps like Orifice, Photoshop and the like. With Linux, most are pre-installed and FREE!!!! And while on the subject of office, Libre Office and Open Office are not only free, but a very similar looking interface.. Not only that, but you also get additional f...

Re: When did you come to Linux?

I am getting closer to ditching Microsoft completely, as Mint Linux evolves and gets better. https://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-releases-its-first-linux-product/ https://fossbytes.com/xenix-history-microsoft-unix-operating-system/ But in the real world, what does this portend for Linux? ms are...

Re: Timeshift helped me out today, but is somewhat daunting for newbies

  • Timeshift is similar to system restore on windows
  • Clonezilla is a disk imaging / cloning suite for backing up and cloning, alike to driveimage on windows
Not sure thats the best description, but a description, none the less..

Re: Timeshift helped me out today, but is somewhat daunting for newbies

@ hydrurga Yep.. That fixed it.. While I'm no expert, I am savvy enough to read he output given with updates, etc.. However, Update manager was only giving 'Error' and checking details stated 'return code 1'. From my ammeter programming, I do realise that success is '0', '1' being a fail - though wi...

Re: Timeshift helped me out today, but is somewhat daunting for newbies

I had a similar experience with the update.. *newbies please read Timeshift may look daunting, but its best to just press on and do it. As always with something new - take your time and read/try to understand as much as you can. 1st run may take a little time and once done, future restore points hap...

Re: When did you come to Linux?

Agreed, I used xp for a few years & it worked quite well (not TOO many BSODs), although its file management left a lot to be desired. That was (mostly) fixed & much improved in Win7 although 7 had its own issues (more overheads to name the worst offender) & would regularly hang for ages when trying...

Re: When did you come to Linux?

It is funny to me, how many of us followed similar trajectories with Linux RedHat (Mandrake)>SuSE>Debian (Ubuntu/Mint). Could it be that there is a theme here? Could it be that installing software via APT-Get prevents dependency h*ll and makes things much smoother? Or could it have been the pain of...

Re: accessing my local disk E from windows

Hi, And sorry to hear about your troubles.. When I was on Windoze, I used to use Easus Partition Recovery, to retrieve partitions, but often some of the data is lost due to being overwritten. Its a worst case scenario you have there.. Hindsight is such a woderfull thing, but if your doing something ...

Re: Hello, everyone!

Mint just keeps getting better.. While there's a huge number of distros (And versions of distros), it's not right to sway anyone to a particular dostro/version, as what is right for 1 person, may not be for another. That said, if anyone in my circles was to ask, especially those new to Linux, I woul...

Re: Things I Love About LinuxMint 19

Mint19 is slightly more resource intensive than 18 and 18 has long term support. Unless you have a good reason to go for 19, I'd advise sticking with 18. If it's not broke, don't fix...

Re: When did you come to Linux?

Mint has surpassed ms in so many levels.. the only thing that ms has the strangle hold on is business (companies are unwilling to spend training staff - would work out cheaper in the long run) and gaming, but there's so many alternatives to ms for gaming and steamOs is great for promoting gaming on ...

Re: My upgrade experience

No bother.. I did the fresh install.. now the problem dvd drive is recognised and all other hardware is out the box ready too.. Yeah, I've had to reinstall software, but I backed stuff up, so it's not end of the world. I know each new version has it's issues, but so far, it's fixed more than anythin...

Re: Things I Love About LinuxMint 19

Best thing about Mint19? I have a Lenovo T410, that has a DVD-RAM drive in it - its a Matshita (the quality is in the name...) It was enough trouble getting Windoze to recognise it, so I could write a Linux live CD.. Finding drivers for scummy hardware in linux can be even more of a pain.. Mint18.3,...

Re: My upgrade experience

I had an issue with a cheap and nasty DVD drive with mint 18, tried mint 19 on live and nothing was broken, just the dvd was fixed.. happy days.. Trying to do a 18.3 - 19 upgrade and it's taking forever. May have to abandon soon as it well late, may have to fresh install. Damn, should have gone fres...
