Can I ask somewhat of an unusual question ..

For a while I have been in too networking and also interested in security. In 2019 soon too be 2020 do you need a GUI. Also am I correct in thinking the GUI is served up by the xserver and thus whatever flavour of the desktop environment you prefer. So "GUI" > "xserver" > and lets say "Cinnamon" .. ...

Re: Breaking down Linux MInt to its indivisual components ..

Understand, a newly installed Mint system has about 300,000 files. It doesn't break down into simple components. What's the context of the question? What do you want to do? What I have been looking in to after somewhat of a break over the last 12 months is bash scripting. As I understand it, the sy...

(Solved) Breaking down Linux MInt to its indivisual components ..

At the moment I have LM 18.3 installed being the latest stable release of the 18.x series . If I were to break down the different components of LM, what is it I would have. I know that obviously you have to have the kernel, the xserver for the GUI being what ever flavor you choose for the desktop en...

Re: Questions about LM & Ubuntu. I'm still learning ..

Thats what I meant systemd. I'm not fully fluent with LM and didn't know that is was derived off Ubuntu. Do you know if Ubuntu is derived off Debian. This is all very silly if you know this stuff but I have been unsure for a while about the bigger picture of the family of OS’s . Is LM made up of a c...

Questions about LM & Ubuntu. I'm still learning ..

Hey, I have been on LM for quite some time. Basically pretty much starting from 17.3 . The reason I have went for xx . 3 in each release is because its the most stable version of the xx LM OS . I was curious to know if their are ever any benefits to actually upgrading to say a full blown fresh insta...

Re: Completely disable ping (LM Mate 18.3, 19)

I've been having a look around /proc/sys/ , looking at individual files and what is and is not commented out. For the tweaking of the Mint System as I'm on 18.3 at the moment (with plans to upgrade to 19.3 when its released) also looking at sysctl.d under /ect/ ; their also seems to be some further ...

Re: Completely disable ping (LM Mate 18.3, 19)

I just want to at least to an extent apologize for my stupidity as I did not read the sysctl.conf file correctly in the directory /etc/sysctl.conf . I've been reading the file thoroughly and hence realizing that " # " is actually a hashed out command as what you would have in the likes of hashed out...

Re: Completely disable ping (LM Mate 18.3, 19)

You'd enter the specific command I gave, sudo sysctl net.ipv4.icmp_echo_ignore_all=1 , from a terminal. To have it automatically executed at boot you in /etc/sysctl.conf add the line "net.ipv4.icmp_echo_ignore_all=1" -- and after doing so you can rather than reboot also simply execute sudo sysctl -...

Questions regarding the CLI and how to execute commands ..

I've been reading online and doing some reading on the man pages for the command chmod and I'm curious about being able to properly execute a command. With the terminal, if I enter a command such as; sudo apt-get remove bleachbit , using bleachbit as an example of an application I could remove my qu...

Re: Completely disable ping (LM Mate 18.3, 19)

Can I ask, if I were to do this on my system as I'm running 18.3 would I enter this in to the terminal CLI or do I need to edit the file sysctl.conf . I've entered the following command in to the terminal, and now I'm getting a line back saying this. PING 192.168.1.xx (192.168.1.xx) 56(84) bytes of ...

Hey gyes. Can I ask somewhat of a stupid Question.

Re: Just how secure is LM 18.x ..

With Mint the OS is the least of your security, and privacy for that matter, concerns. It's your router and browser you ought to be concerned with - way more than Linux Mint. What would you recommend with regards too the Browser like FF or Chrome. Keeping it updated is an obvious must but can any o...
