Re: Can't remove old hard drive after installation - won't boot

maybe the fstab as trytip suggested? Wish I'd seen this thread earlier; in a word, yes, that should have fixed the problem. My guess is that the installer grabbed the first swap partition it found & the resultant delay when the original SSD was removed was a result of it looking for the missing swa...

Re: What sends noobs running back to Windows?

I do, because sometimes it is the only thing that can open some codecs. I do too (but not on Windows, BTW, as I don't use it), because it handles the DVD menus whereas smplayer, which I use for almost everything else, doesn't. It's almost all I use vlc for; the aforementioned but also a bit of expe...

Re: Error: The ext4 file system creation failed

Laptop will be a bit sluggish with Mint Cinnamon 19.1, I think it'd be reasonably OK with Cinnamon as that hardware is better specified than the one I'm using to type this; dual core Atom @ 1.66GHz & hardware capped to 2GB RAM. It'll be good enough to get a feel of Cinnamon at least. When I started...

Re: install grub-customizer on Linux Mint 19.1 error

Although I would not recommend installing grub-customizer in the first place, I strongly recommend you backup your existing grub file first, e.g. sudo cp /etc/default/grub /etc/default/grub.bak .. as this will make it easier to restore the original configuration; especially as you say you are just h...

@AndyMH: I was thinking of suggesting that. He will have registered with an email address but it's possible he's changed it & forgotten to update the profile .. I've done that a few times on other sites in the past few years. I'd say it's worth a try, though.

Re: Tea or Coffee?

Makes perfect sense to me. And the Germans definitely know how to make an alcohol-free pilsener that tastes good to me. I have no idea why the Dutch manufacturers are struggling so much... Seems we haven't done much better, anyone remember Kaliber? Like a malt syrup but diluted. Awful stuff. Tried ...

Re: How to transfer Youtube videos?

If it's not a single file, I assume you set it to download all available formats (which is possible with youtube-dl). Being an Android device, I don't know what you are using or is available for your mobile OS so unfortunately can't comment on that. The stuff I download with youtube-dl is a single f...

I hope so too. Can't remember when he usually goes on his travels but he does normally let us know. His most recent post was on 27-05-2019.

He's a great guy, hope to see him back on here soon. :)

Re: What sends noobs running back to Windows?

Thanks very much for that, gm10 . This will speed things up even more, especially as I use the Terminal for lots of things such as admin tasks but also stuff like youtube-dl to grab the likes of The Sky at Night from iPlayer. Unfortunately it might be the case that the Terminal itself might put off ...

Re: What sends noobs running back to Windows?

I use history | grep "partly remembered command snippet" a lot. Same here, although I only recently discovered this useful shortcut. Prior to that I was using cat ~/.bash_history | grep command-snippet . Often quicker than using the up-arrow. Must tidy the clutter out of my bash history a...

Re: Tea or Coffee?

Tea has always been my tipple but I do drink coffee sometimes. My other legal intoxicating substance being, of course, alcohol. Used to finish with an Irish coffee or two when one of the local bars was still under its previous ownership and they had the machine on the counter. I squeeze the life out...

Re: Brasero Ripping Damaged DVD to ISO

BG405, I misunderstood you the first time: I thought you had only 1 dvdplayer/burner that could read 2 different regions. But you have 2 different dvd drives with each a different region coding. Actually you were right the first time. I do have another drive but don't know where it is; both tests w...

Re: Brasero Ripping Damaged DVD to ISO

Now the question arises: is the hardware responsible for this ability to play 2 different region dvd's or the LinuxMint / Vlc software? I'm not sure about this but I do know I had to set this device to Region 2 in order to play "native" DVDs on it with Windows. The other drive was set to Region 1 s...

Re: How many are 100% Linux here?

I do still have a couple of "working" Windows instalations .. 98 & xp .. neither of which have been touched in quite a while. So, in practice (apart from the experimentation with VMs, which doesn't really count as it's not on "bare metal") I've been 100% Linux since the switch, around February 2016,...

Re: Brasero Ripping Damaged DVD to ISO

Could you give more detailed information about this wonderfully nice info about "LInux not caring about region coding for dvd's"? Maybe not detailed as such (at least not yet) .. however a test: I have just now connected my LG optical drive & played sections of a couple of DVDs; one Region 1 and th...

Re: Brasero Ripping Damaged DVD to ISO

@ carum carvi: I think the reference was to region coding.

AFAIK Linux doesn't care about that; although my LG writer has previously been set to a specific region using Windows software. It will work with all of my DVDs regardless of their region setting with the appropriate software e.g. VLC, K3b.
