Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

I've been giving Manjaro a spin on my Acer D255E since I installed it late Friday night. Set up with a separate /DATA partition, containing a (fairly) recent backup of the LM17.3 KDE /home partition, brought it up to date last night. Quite impressed with it so far although there's a few teething pro...

Re: Dell inspiron 6400 Broadcomm wi-fi card.

I had a look at the specs of your machine, you should be able to swap the WiFi card for a better one. According to some of the listings yours is Wireless G only which limits you to 54Mb/s (6.75MB/s) theoretical but as this includes protocols etc. the actual data rate is lower. I'd recommend an Ather...

Re: [SOLVED] Possibly Erroneous Error Message re: GRUB

You're most welcome! Thanks for updating us; it may help someone else with the same problem. BTW. Had it been a wrong UUID (which does happen, especially when partitions are changed) it would likely have caused a slow startup, or problems starting up. It's the first time I've seen a missing line lik...

exactly 8 1/2 minutes ... The entire process took only eleven minutes. :D I downloaded a couple of Linux ISOs using my mate's phone hotspot last Saturday & was getting similar speeds (i.e. about 3x the transfer rate I get on my home connection). He's got loads of data left which the provider will s...

Re: out of space on flash drive

Sorry I'm not very familiar with USB + persistance, but assuming it runs OK once you clear out some files, it's well worth a look in /var/cache/apt/archives as this can get cluttered with old packages.

Re: Linux Mint 19 codenamed “Tara”

gksudo no longer works in 19  Hopefully that will be fixed soon! I haven't tested the Mint 19 editions yet but that does come as a surprise. It took more than 4 hours to download the iso. Is that normal or am I just slow? That does seem slow, just downloaded the Mint 19 Xfce ISO at approx 1....

Re: The "fox" is buying the hen house??? Microsoft purchases Github

I'm not at all happy about this. Seems like corporate greed & we all know what often happens when companies swallow their competitors, a bit like BSB satellite TV in the UK (anyone remember that?), which Sky bought and then killed off, not saying MS will kill off GitHub (not straight away, anyway) b...

Re: No Bios Boot Menu

Only time I don't see the BIOS access option is when the machine is in Suspend (or Hibernate?) mode (which is usually the case with my Acer netbook). I wonder if this had something to do with it? Perhaps a flag had been erroneously set with the previous 18.3 installation?

currently, I'm only using 19GB /root
That sounds a bit high, mine's about 16GB after more than 2 years' use. May be normal for Mint 19 though. How much stuff is accumulating in /var/cache/apt/archives ? Mine needs cleaning up again. Got rid of about 4 or 5 GB last clearout.

Re: FBI Tells People To Reboot Routers, Warns Of Major Malware Infection

 That evidently works best with the English pronunciation "rooter" used for such devices and tallies with "root" (spelled "route") to navigate the road network (we use "router" for the carpentry tool). I wonder if this is the cause of some recent internet outages. A week or so ago I...

Re: Why Linux>Mac>Windows

f a Windows user isn't happy with Windows than the Windows user should have the initiative to look for a better alternative. True, but the thing is, many people are either oblivious to the existence of good alternative operating systems like Linux Mint or they don't know that it can (usually) be ea...

Re: FBI Tells People To Reboot Routers, Warns Of Major Malware Infection

It connects to Photobucket and attempts to d/l a picture. on the way it drops the payload at the router and sits there. After a while it connects to another server and downloads Stage 2, which is basically a packet sniffer. I'll have to dig in to the router settings & see if it's possible t...

Re: Linux Mint 19 codenamed “Tara”

All files will be owned by newname including everything in the /name directory. I wouldn't have guessed that newname would be the owner of all the files. Neither would I, thought you'd have to do a chown on them. What I'd do though, is rename the old /home/username and use the original name for the...

Re: FBI Tells People To Reboot Routers, Warns Of Major Malware Infection

Actually, the WNR1000 I had that appeared to have issues was right out front. I swapped it for another model not on the list. It was the WiFi provider, that's why it was out front. That's interesting, I wonder what difference it makes? Obviously approved WiFi connected devices can access the Intern...
