Re: restore internal HDD

I don't see a reference to /home in the fstab, so this must be under / (same partition). You could add an entry for it after copying the new config stuff over, but first need to deal with the encryption. Unfortunately I have never used or dealt with encryption so hopefully someone who does will be a...

Re: New to Linux, trying to understand the playing field

my Desktop still contains shortcuts to projects that I work on everyday My old xp desktop used to be set up with groups of related icons a bit like that, but with slightly less "free" space! Only issue was, sometimes something would bork and all the icons would be re-shuffled and laid out...

Re: restore internal HDD

A couple of questions: I presume you previously had the HDD mounted as /home and maybe a data partition and that you used "Erase disk and install Linux Mint" rather than the "Something else.." and setting up the partitions? If you are using a different username, you'll also need ...

Welcome! :D Re: As has been said, if you don't want to use the terminal you don't have to. Most everything is point and click. Certainly many instructions are terminal based as for many that is just the easier way to do it. The fact that you can ask questions and find answers will allow you to becom...

Re: My experience using Linux Mint as newbie

Welcome Merlin! :D You seem to know rather more than the "average noob". A few comments: Re. the "stuttering"; that does indeed sound to me like a power-saving "feature". I guess many distros these days tend to focus on and apply settings more appropriate for lap...

Re: Back to Linux Mint I go.

Welcome back! I started out with Cinnamon with Mint 17.3. Really nice look and feel and a great start to my Linux adventure. A couple of nights ago, I copied the OS (Mint 21.3 Xfce) on my Acer D255E from the spinning disk to an SSD. For such a (by today's standards) low-spec machine, it runs great ....

Re: Terminology Oldsters vs Youngsters

Must have been for that. I do remember sitting in a coffee shop surfing the internet with a laptop that would not have had wireless networking. I actually have a yet-untested PCMCIA wireless network module; also have a couple of PC PCMCIA interface cards which are still new-in-packaging! I also kno...

Re: How to create a bootable ISO of an existing system?

In other cases you may not able to avoid some troubleshooting like changing kernels, edit grub boot arguments, load your system in compatibility mode, getting drivers for Wifi adapters etc. I agree, but the same would be the case, surely, with the OP's original question? (I'd think so, therefore no...

That sort of thing does get my goat.

But, probably, not quite as "irritating" for me as "Google it" ..

Re: How to create a bootable ISO of an existing system?

I agree with the above re. cloning. It's what I (effectively) have done with this system; I fitted an SSD to replace the spinning disk with the intention of keeping said HDD "synchronized" with the new internal one on a regular basis (let's see how that one works out! I'm slack). In my cas...

Re: Terminology Oldsters vs Youngsters

Well the first time you drive an automatic at some point you are going to try and change gear with the brake pedal and because something is going wrong you instinctively press harder. You only do this once!                 .. and .. .. and get very closely acquainted with the windshield? Check. :mr...

Re: Terminology Oldsters vs Youngsters

This also reminds me of going into the BIOS to set base memory to 640K instead of 512K (which was for some reason the default on the old PB640). Also, on older machines, shoving as much as possible into "himem" to give enough room for programs to install and run. Use of "dblspace"...

Exactly !!!

I'd also expect them to supply a machine if the s/w also requires a proprietary OS in order to ruin it. ←oops should I have typed "run"?

Re: Lenovo prorotype see-through laptop?!?

I guess Lenovo has garnished a rather sour reputation of late .. hope my ancient examples don't fall in to this category. They are still serving me well. My thoughts are .. with an intermediate LCD layer which could effectively black out the display between two layers of OLEDs, one could have a doub...

Re: Terminology Oldsters vs Youngsters

This talk about manual vs. automatic reminds me of when I started driving in Kenya. The comment was "don't you people usually drive automatics?" I said at the time that was probably more common in America but most of us Brits drove manual cars (some of the locals naturally assumed I was an...

Re: Terminology Oldsters vs Youngsters

A "folder". Seriously? It is called a "directory". I totally agree on that one. Is that per chance a Windows-ism? A bit like the default Win behaviour of classing EVERYTHING as a "Document" be it music, video, whatever and placing it in a subdirectory of the My Documen...

Re: formatting external drives...renders them unusable???

Yes I can see how an LED would be helpful, no room on an SD card tho. There would be room for a chip LED in a full-size SD card form factor; also true for micro-SD adaptors, although I've yet to encounter one. This would be visible at least when looking at the slot side on. IMHO laptops should have...

If that's the case then I must be having the same one. I'm sure this was an option in LM17.3 Cinnamon.

I'll see if I can set a second virtual display in VirtualBox (something I haven't tried yet).

Lenovo prorotype see-through laptop?!?

This was posted on another Forum a couple of weeks ago and thought it'd be interesting to see the views of our members here. Reading AZgl1500's thread "Three Screens to plug into your Laptop" reminded me of it. I apologize if it's already been mentioned here but I couldn't find any referen...

Re: Three Screens to plug into your Laptop

I'd love something like that. I prefer more than one monitor; pretty much a "must-have" when doing graphics stuff, or doing anything else if you need to use a browser at the same time. Pity it's USB-C as I don't have this on my machines. :( guess this won't work via standard A-type USB3 po...
