Re: Can a linux mint wifi device match cabled speeds? [SOLVED]
+1 for LinSSID. And this: You can also tweak the channel your wifi router is operating at. Look at the neighbors traffic in the graph and try to pick a channel that overlaps the least against them. Busy overlapping channels mean more noise and less performance. .. It's not uncommon for routers with ...

Re: A new USB Stick
@Jerboum: Given the expectations, wouldn't a USB3←→SATA interface and an SSD or two be a better option? These will easily fit in e.g. a shirt pocket and will likely be decent value for money per GB, faster and last much longer. An example: it took only a few hours to transfer my entire system over, ...

Re: Displayport-to-HDMI converter out to LG TV. No Audio. **Severe Newbie
I'd suggest trying
pulseaudio -k
in a terminal and see if the HDMI audio option then appears in the audio settings. I've done this in the past but note this was with an older Cinnamon version.- Wed Apr 17, 2024 11:15 am

I agree with mediclaser . It's often far easier to post a command for someone to copy and paste, especially as their desktop settings, configurations or even the whole desktop environment etc, are likely to differ. Hard to guess what's on someone else's screen. Also, for some tasks it's often...

it won't wake up by keypress This is likely an advantage as it probably means the keyboard controller isn't being kept powered in sleep mode, like it does on one of my machines (or two? I'm sure the Acer did that with LM17.3 Cinnamon, but doesn't now with LM21.3 Xfce) where any key-press wakes it. ...

Nope, you had right the first time. I guess so! I'll admit to having a Win10 VM just for curiosity's sake. Also Win11 .. which installed fine in the VM despite its limited resource allocation. So, if it works in a VM, why such an issue with recent, real hardware? Doesn't make much sense to me.

all things do come to an end At least you didn't say "all good things come to an end"! Good riddance, in my book. The last "decent" (IMHO) MS OS being Win7 but that was already pushing the limits of the hardware I was using at the time with all its bloat and the antivi...

I HAVE a grey beard, so I am a member of the "club" Same here .. in fact a few years ago it was practically completely white after being salt-and-pepper for some time; past year or so the colour has been coming back (my head hair has lost nearly all the white patches/streaks, now darker t...

today I installed Virtualbox V7.0.14/Ubuntu 22.04 ..//.. However, as opposed to the previous packages where not insignificant command line interactions (for a raw novice) were required, in this case I double clicked on the download and it just installed with no other actions required? Sounds like y...

... And I thought I was doing well with an emergency light fitting from the factory I was helping to set up! NiCd battery pack had a date-stamp from 1987 IIRC and the thing still gave well in excess of the minimum run-time when I fitted the thing on the middle landing at home. Current (much more ...

That xz thing was a good one.  Ironically, that's one way I get nonstandard keyboard characters, such as "©". I used to do it that way with Windows + sticky notes with all the needed characters and symbols. Also used to remember the ALT codes for common ones. Now I do it w...

.. it might draw more current that the laptop (or most desktop) computers can pass out of their USB ports. In this case, a SATA to USB interface with a power input connector and separate power supply is needed. These aren't expensive; I have one which does 2½" and 3½" SATA and IDE and it...

It's probably safer to not to make images while a system is running. What would happen if you made a change on something, such as install a program or make a setting change while the image is being created? :? I agree 100% with this. In fact even in Windows I was getting partition clone failures us...

they work like a valve so calling them valves make sense, more sense than tubes since the envelopes look more like a deep cup than a tube .. Update Manager actually asks this by default ("Do you want to switch to a local mirror?") .. you can also do this (from Update Manager) by clicking Edit → Software Sources . Not sure if a tutorial is really needed, in this case? People who don't notice that probably won't read a guide anyw...

Not a fix, but does
acpi -V
in Terminal show the battery level & whether it's charging? If so there may be a temporary workaround (kludge) which I'll post here. I don't have one of those Fujitsu machines myself, to check with.- Tue Mar 26, 2024 1:21 pm

Re: How do I know if I'm ready to permanently switch to Linux Mint?
Simple answer: When you feel you are ready and no longer need to boot into Windows. In my case I switched when BSOD-OS .. er .. BSOD'd on me that final time, ironically when I plugged my scanner in - and decided enough is enough, I can't be bothered to fix it again this time. There's a very nice opt...
