Re: new partition ownership and permissions

It depends on what kind of partition? Ext4, ntfs, ...? How are you mounting it? With partition mounted, what does this return ? 2Tb drive i created one partition as ext4 It actually goes by the "user id" number which is "1000" for the first user, then 1001, etc. But you can allow "group" access or ...

[Solved] new partition ownership and permissions

i formatted a new external hard drive with gparted. now the only way to write files to it is with root privileges. i realize now that gparted creates the partition under root user so i guess no surprise here. when i run ls -l on the device it shows owned by root user and group disk so i added my use...

Re: virtualbox not following dark theme

weird thing is virtualbox followed the dark theme before i upgraded it to 6.0. i think it was on 5.2 before that. i'm using cinnamon's mint-y dark theme. Or run Vbox with a QT native dark theme - it won't match but it won't stand out like a sore thumb. VirtualBox -style Fusion %U in a terminal or yo...

virtualbox not following dark theme

virtualbox 6.0 is not following my dark theme. i've spent some time researching and the goto solution is to install a qt config app. i've been though all the solution suggestions. installed qt5ct and qt5-style-plugins and exported QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME="qt5ct". qt5ct config tool pops up, i set to gtk...

well after re-reading man bash several times i think i got it. it shouldn't work but i edited PS1 in etc/bash.bashrc and it customized my tty prompt.

but according to man bash login shells don't call /etc/bash.bashrc. oh well

Re: custom prompt in TTY

By "in TTY" I assume you mean on a virtual console; the text consoles on Ctrl-Alt-F[1-6]. If yes, those shells are launched as login shells; man bash would inform as to differences wrt. startup files with non-login shells, such as ones launched by your graphical terminal emulator. However, on Ubunt...

custom prompt in TTY

i've been able to create some custom prompts modifying some of the many .bashrc files floating around the OS. I can't figure out where to make the changes for a custom prompt in TTY though.

any help? thanks

My wife got one of those things a year ago and put it where she spends the most of her time, and a very similar device has been showing up ever since. it's funny i've tried unplugging Alexa. then i reboot machines and router and things, but by that time my wife ha...

Re: UEFI boot differnent than BIOS Boot

Are you with your question referring to a situation that if you enter the Mint USB stick you get a different Mint depending on booting in UEFI or booting legacy? yes exactly my question My first thought is, it boots another installation in UEFI and legacy. Do you have more than one Linux setup, is ...

UEFI boot differnent than BIOS Boot

i have mint live on a usb and my PC can boot it in UEFI or BIOS mode. what is strange to me is i get 2 separate configurations depending on which one i choose to boot. different desktop set ups, different network configs, etc.

The option of unchecking a PPA is helpful for troubleshooting. Instead of having to remove the PPA, you can uncheck it and continue with troubleshooting. If the PPA isn't a problem, you can easily check it again and have it active.
makes sense. thanks

deleting PPAs. uncheck or remove?

i see all my PPAs in the sotfware sources GUI. what's the difference between unchecking the enable option of a PPA and removing it entirely? anything? also, i am assuming that the applications in those PPAs show up in the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager when doing a search right? thanks
