Re: Former distro hopper settling down with Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon

I'm glad to know others have had similar experiences. I was torn between Linux Mint and Peppermint 7, but Peppermint only comes with LXDE. It was a bit too simple for me and I really liked Cinnamon since the first time I tried it.

Former distro hopper settling down with Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon

I have tried many different operating systems and about every DE out there. I would see something new and shiny on DistroWatch and boom, download and install. My wife called it an addiction but it was fun, yet I always found myself falling short. I came close to settling down with Mint 18.1 KDE, but...

Move Panel in Linux Mint 18 KDE?

Hello everyone. I have been playing with Linux Mint 18 KDE on my test box, and I'm wondering if its possible to move the panel from the bottom of the screen to the top of the screen. I know you can in Cinnamon, MATE and XFCE, but is it possible to do in KDE and if so how? I am at a loss so far. Than...

(Solved) Move panel in Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon?

Just a quick question, is it possible to move the panel in Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon from the bottom of the screen to the top? If this is possible, then how because I've tried about everything. I thought I remembered older versions of Cinnamon doing this, but could be wrong. Thanks in advance.

Code: Select all

Thanks, everything is working great again! I did have to do the following line after the above:

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe 8812au

Re: Linux Mint 17.3 not detecting wifi

Here is an easier one sudo apt-get install git linux-headers-$(uname -r) build-essential git clone https://github.com/abperiasamy/rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux.git sudo dkms add ./rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux sudo dkms install 8812au/1.0 sudo modprobe 8812au OK. So I have used the above step when doing a fresh ...

Re: Linux Mint MATE wont load

Use this sudo update-alternatives --config x-session-manager to select mate OK. I'm back on MATE. But whenever I shutdown and startup I still get the black screen/pointer. I have to hit ctrl+alt+F1 and type startx, then it brings up MATE. If I go to Reboot, it takes me to a shell window with comman...

Re: Linux Mint MATE wont load

Change the session to mate like mine. Since you're in the console you will have to use the nano editor. nano ~/.dmrc Also what does this return ls -l /etc/alternatives/x-session-manager I'm not sure how to get back to MATE. I'm stuck in Cinnamon. When I try to log out, I get a black screen with a b...

Re: Linux Mint MATE wont load

WharfRat wrote:banjodaddy,

Usually re-installing mdm fixes that problem.

Do you have a file ~/ .dmrc containing

Code: Select all

[bill@rosa] ~ $ cat ~/.dmrc
[Desktop]
Session=mate
Language=en_US.UTF-8
I entered the code and here was the reply it gave me:

Code: Select all

$ cat ~/.dmrc

[Desktop]
Session=gnome-fallback-compiz

Re: Linux Mint MATE wont load

then you only have mdm installed. so the sudo dpkg-reconfigure mdm command should have worked, try a reboot. or at the shell type startx OK, that brought up the cinnamon desktop. Now my shutdown buttons are gone. If I reboot through terminal it goes right back to black screen/pointer. I get to shel...

hold alt and press the f3, f4, f5.. etc. One of them will drop you to a shell prompt. Re: Linux Mint MATE wont load

I usually recommend not mixing major desktop environments, I think that's the reason a Mate and Cinnamon desktop is distributed. When you reach the point of a black screen with a pointer press ctl-alt-f1, login then enter: sudo service mdm stop sudo apt-get install --reinstall mdm It might start af...

Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon vs. Linux Mint 17.3 MATE

Hello everyone. I'm needing some advice for my dad's laptop. See, he has extremely little computer knowledge and lives 6.5 hours away from me. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get my sound to work? Geetings! I've some ideas and might be able to help. First, i need to know what mint-spin (Cinnamon, Mate, KDE, XFCE) you've installed. If you're not sure, just run the "inxi -F" command in a terminal window and copy/paste the output int...
