Re: Windows Network folder is empty

You might try the 64 bit version. It is much more powerful if your computer is built in the last 12 years. It could see the other computers and be able to handle the data a little easier than the 32 bit version.

Re: Transferring files from Windows to Linux MInt

Usually the Fat32 files for .txt and "word", PDF Etc can be recognized and read and edited by the libre Office suite. I have never had problems even looking at picture and video files. If your DVD burner does not work, use your "software manager" to install the necessary driver. BTW I use Cinnamon in...

OK I did not read the entire manual only the I/O specifications as there are several 64 and 32 bit slots.

Re: How Do You Install Cinnamon On Ancient Workstation?

looking at the manual, I do believe that the (old) computer in question is a 64 bit architecture. Give a 64 bit OS a try. I have run into a few computers with the holes in the screen graphics and other issues that had a hidden UEFI in the bios. I went back in and found the keys that killed the UEFI ...

Re: how can I make a boot disk for linux mint

First step. 1, Get into the bios at boot, depending on the computer, F1, F2, F8, F9, F11, or ESC. 2. After the latter, select where the boot device is. 3. turn off Fast and secure boot, select legacy, turn off UEFI if you can find it. 4. You can use the external HDD or "LIVE" OS flash drive or backu...

My ISP, Comcast, bounced around a bit but it now indicates ~20-22MB. LM 19 iso download is 90 seconds. That is 1.8 gb.

Re: Microsoft to start charging monthly fee for Windows 7...

I keep getting these amusing scam phone calls. "Emergency phone call from Microsoft. Your license is expiring and we need your $125 renewal fee abd your computer is infected with malware. Upon receipt of funds we will clean your computer." I start laughing and say "Bring it on assholes!" I then hang...

Re: Who no longer trusts or uses Facebook?

I never trusted Twitter, Facebook, or any of the other social media. I once signed onto Linkdin but every time later they said my password was no longer valid. I never signed on again. They have been trying to get me back on with daily e-mails but it is not happening. I have run iinto too many elect...

Re: Hurricane Florence. Prepare early!

I am glad we don't need to worry about hurricane type weather. Just rain! In Greater Portand Oregon we do get occasional smoke from wild fires that are over 100 miles away in the summer but the last really disabling weather we had was the Columbus day storm in 1961 with winds exceeding 100 miles an ...

Re: older cannon scanners

I picked up 3 canon scanners up the other day Lide20 is the oldest. My LM18.3 Cinnamon did not see any of them but when I clicked "Simple scan' they all worked perfectly. They only ran $8 each with the USB cables. I was able to zoom 400% and the images were fine. No funny lines or obvious distortion...

Re: Asked by old friend to do an LM install. (Solved)

ThankYou all! I downloaded a half dozen of the apps and I got them to working together in my old Samsung this evening. EasyCad, Blender, Ecad , Misfit, Kicad, Eeschema are a few. I just will need to introduce to the other users in the system. If the friend and his wife like them the rest of the firm...

Re: Asked by old friend to do an LM install.

I appreciate the notice Mark. The install is no problem at all. I have no doubt that I can get the computers working. I have resurrected well over 200 laptops and desktops and MacBooks with Linux Mint in the last couple of years. Most were dead when I started. Some I stuffed with more or faster ram a...

Asked by old friend to do an LM install. (solved)

An old friend of mine asked me to do an install for his wife in a 2 year old quad core i7 Lenovo laptop and a a quad core Asus desktop with all the bells and whistles, also 2 years old. She is a retired EE and still working as a green architect. I offered to refurbish them and do the install with he...

Re: Replace osx on imac with linux

Curiosity! Why are you using32 bit LM ISO on the iMac? I have installed nothing but 64 bit in apples for the last 2 years, 4 in MacBook 2.0' from the 2005. All with Cinnamon and up to 19. The older ones I had to remove the drives and boot them into the initial install on a Toshiba or Acer. I also us...

Re: Budget non-gaming desktop build

I took a friend into a local FreeGeek 2 weeks ago and picked him up a refurbish desktop. Dell with i5 quad processor@2.7 GHZ 8GB ram, 500GB HDD LM18.3 installed, for $56. Added a 24" HDMI monitor foe $42 with cables. We used his old keyboard and mouse. He is very happy with the transition from Windo...
