Re: New to Linux

Welcome Darren.
For help "ripping CD's to HDD's, Or DVD's. The OS and Hardware sections can help a lot. BTW DVD's for DATA, Pix, and Music. Are much easier.4.7 GB VS 800 MB. Sometimes you may need to do an ID change for CD's to work in the right geographic area, Thanks to some Windex BS.

Re: Landing on a street

At least the pilot was able to avoid the telephone/power lines and the street lighting. Also fortunately the traffic going the other way, noticed the plane, and gave him an extra lane. The 42 foot wingspan does take up a bit more than 3 lanes. 8)

Re: Linux for my grandmother.

A month ago a friend expressed a need for a computer (laptop) that worked. She is in her late 60's, a retired nurse/educator. She has several laptops, all windows, that no longer work. I was going to do a quick install of Linux in one but it had issues. She was going to let me fix it when I saw her ...

Re: How many are 100% Linux here?

For all practical purposes this household is 100% Linux. The exceptions are my wife with an android touchpad, My adult daughter with an iPhone, iPad, Dell LM 19.1 Cinnamon, My adult son with an iPhone, Linux Gamer 19.1 Cinnamon, Toshiba laptop Linux Mint, MacBook 2.0 with LM 18.3. Re: Can't boot, can you help?

It looks to me like the OP could use another install. Either from a dvd or maybe the live flash drive the OP is using to get the information. something got missed, or deleted, in the install.

This user is running a HP Mini circa 2008, 2 gb RAM, single core N270 processor XFCE 19.1 - 32 bit!

Re: success on HP mini 210 w/xfce 19.1-64

Another surprise. The N455 processor addresses DDR3 RAM but only up to the 2GB I originally went too from 1 GB. It will not boot to DDR3 4 GB sticks. As it is: patty-cakes@pattycakes-HP-Mini-210-2100:~$ inxi -Fxzd System: Host: pattycakes-HP-Mini-210-2100 Kernel: 4.15.0-54-generic x86_64 bits: 64 co...

Surprise Surprise! The single core atom does pretty good with live action video from offline and playing a DVD on a Lenovo USB DVD burner/player. 8)

Re: success on HP mini 210 w/xfce 19.1-64

I have not done the visual effects thing on the XFCE yet. Everything seems to be running very well. Surprisingly snappy. I have not tried live video downloads yet but I have slower dual core machines running as well. It is a little hesitant on some of the larger apps but once running they are quite ...

success on HP mini 210 w/xfce 19.1-64

I picked up a pretty little HP mini 210-2100 with a single core n455 atom processor. it cost $15. The battery is dead and it had no charger. It ran with a charger that the party had. I picked up a 120 GB SSD for for $19 retail. and dropped in 2 GB of ddr3 ram that I had to replace the 1gb it had. It...

Re: Can't Seem To Boot From USB Stick On HP Laptop

I used Brasero to burn USB Peppermint 9 -32 boot drives for 32 bit machines like dell mini9's and acer aspire 1 (circa 2002) this last few months. This on Cinnamon 18.3 and 19.1. 64 bit machines I have used xfburn on xfce 19.1 32 bit machines to burn the Peppermint 9 32 and Puppy Linux. I try to mak...

Re: Are most Linux Distros easily broken? Your advice please.

The latter is definitely correct DM10. A lot of the US government Windex systems are infected with Windows malware asking for "Your Password" to authenticated form downloads. This posts Malware to your LM "Root".

Re: Standard updates to from kernel 4.15.0-48 to 4.15.0-50 causes laptop to fail to boot

I had a similar issue with one of my laptops last week. It turned out th boot sector was full. I broke out an old boot fix text file and it worked. I got rid of 7 old kernals and some other things. Then I was able to load and boot everything including the newest kernal. Code: Select all sudo apt-get...

Have you tried tweeking the resolution?
I had a similar problem with an OLD MSI u100 with a single core atom. Of course this was a 32 bit system.
I changed to XFCE 19.1 32. Problem gone. I am a fan of Cinnamon though.

That model can accept a 2GB ram card (according to specifications). Swap out the 512 MB card for a 2 GB. Cost is about $15 The 30GB SSD can be replaced with a 128GB SSD for $30. 19.1 XFCE 32 bit will fit and run fine. If you do not have a DVD. They can be bought with a USB adapter for $20. Burn a fl...

Re: Install USB wifi dongle

Try connecting to the enternet with the wired connection. Then search for the website for the manufacturer . They may have the driver, OR, in your "software manager" there may be a driver. OR, in your "software settings" do the "Driver Manager" It may find it and install it.

If you are on a wired connection, post "inxi -Fxzd" from your terminal (copy & past).
