If you have a YouTube channel talking about all this stuff, I'd happily watch it! :)
I feel it safe to say that there's few things which I have more not.

Re: sort error

rene, please go to your first post and modify "Series A B" to "Series/A B". Done (and edited out a Series/T; on reread not sure what I meant with that; result to me still looks fine in any case). [EDIT] Ah; finally understand the thread; I for the sake of filename sorting in the...

one last example then I'm done with the sort issue
We can hope. You have still not specified what you found to be wrong with the result I showed and which had the very thing you one message later said it would need to.

Re: bash script memory size in gb

A very big thing even; it's the subject of numerical analysis. Yes, not only do you "wind up with the chance for an error", given necessarily finite-length computer representation of numbers said error potential is inherent to computer math: 1/3 or Pi, say, is never going to be exactly rep...

Re: Computer upgrade - solid state drive & what else?

I expect you won't need to fiddle with the CPU-fan speed with the Athlon 3000G stock cooler. That seems to be a 65W TDP "near silent" cooler anyway (for a 35W TDP chip). The Antec EA-380 should indeed also be fine; it's a rebranded Seasonic unit and while Seasonic certainly also produces &...

Re: bash script memory size in gb

Yes. And just to reinforce my earlier reply then: note how e.g. 1024^3 has a precise (integer) representation also in the computer; when you divide by it you still introduce a potential round-off error inherent to floating point math --- but only once . If you do N / 1024 / 1024 / 1024 you have thre...

How would you go up again, without using 1024 / 1024 / 1024?
Not sure I understand what you mean; n / a / b / c is simply n / (a * b * c); in this special case, n / 1024^3.

Re: Will it always be a slog using Linux?

Linux is an operating system developed, if you'll allow me, "Just for Fun". I.e., developed by and primarily for those for whom the computer itself rather than (just) anything you might do with it is interesting. Among those for who it is not, those that consider the computer a mere tool, ...

Re: bash script memory size in gb

$ awk '$1 == "MemTotal:" {printf("%.2f GiB\n", $2 / 1024 / 1024)}' /proc/meminfo 13.61 GiB The salient point here was more the rounding up (i.e., see above) but what I'm having a really hard time not commenting on is the general numerical mathematics point that one should do one...

Or by the way simply sftp. I.e., set up regular ssh access to the system you want to remote access files on (preferably via public key) and go to and/or bookmark e.g. sftp://1.2.3.4/home/you in your file manager for access to your home directory on that machine. Or Warpinator certainly if all/both a...

Re: Samba is Trash

As to your subject line: hear, hear. And in that sense: why are you trying to use Samba? Samba is a reverse-engineered implementation of foreign, Windows network technology on Linux. If "local" as you use it means intra-Linux then just use native technology such as NFS. But also note that ...

Re: Computer upgrade - solid state drive & what else?

Certainly if you at the same time switch to an SSD as discussed early in thread you will supposedly find things significantly more spiffy than up to now used to. Note; be sure to enable XMP (or DOCP/EOCP if the board calls it that) in the BIOS to enable the higher memory speed.

Re: Computer upgrade - solid state drive & what else?

What do you mean by "ratings"? I would still definitely not get the 200GE; the 3000G is basically a one-and-a-half year newer version of that same chip; a one-and-a-half year better version of that same chip as the fab got more experience churning out Zen silicon. It has the same power spe...

Except in this case, nemo is intelligent enough to read the contents of the desktop file, work out what the executable is ( Exec= ), display the icon for the program ( Icon= ) and then display the application name ( Name= ) instead of the filename - neat or what? Neato! Name=readme.txt Icon=plainte...

Re: No internet access with KPN router

Am afraid I've little useable suggestion. Given that W7 on the same system works it must be system-sides; given that it's both Wi-Fi and ethernet and specific to this connection it's not a hardware/signal-strength issue; DNS was denied. Any suggestion I have boils down to Linux-sides setup but given...

Ping to what always fails; to name, IP or both? If ping 8.8.8.8 works it's a DNS issue: have you configured custom DNS on Linux? I.e., perhaps your router back home?

NB; The history file is by default limited to 500 entries; see man bash, HISTSIZE and HISTFILESIZE. If you add e.g. HISTSIZE=-1 to ~/.bashrc it's unlimited, i.e., will retain above suggestion.

Re: backup using rsync

There's an unfortunate set of alternatives in your report. I.e., you say that you did sudo rsync -r /home/ve3sjv /media/ve3sjv/Storage_A but then say that wound up in /media/home/ve3sjv/Storage_A , i.e., with the additional home . Then one sentence later you say to have tried to delete /media/Storag...
