Re: sudden and strange loss of USB functionality

Try this. sudo chown -R yourusername:yourusername /location of your USB like /media/ or /dev/sdx You know that queasy feeling you get after doing something and then realizing you don't know what the hell you just did? Yeah, I've got that feeling. I was unable to figure out the direct path and how t...

sudden and strange loss of USB functionality

I've had Mint 19 on this laptop since summer. A few weeks ago, it suddenly started showing me lock symbols on usb folders and files and claims the files, folders and usb itself are "read only". Oddly, they will occasionally work fine. I first noticed it after using a usb on a Windows machine at work...

Re: troubles booting dual boot cloned with with easeus todo backup

Well I decided to delete the Linux partition first and as soon as I did it i knew it would cause problems. But all is well; your beta cloned Windows just fine, but I had to install an old version of Mint I had laying around. Without it, Windows wouldn't boot but now it does. So hurray! It worked. Th...

Re: troubles booting dual boot cloned with with easeus todo backup

Well it turned out just to be a partition problem (partition 4 not starting on zone boundary, or something like that) but I nuked it anyway. So after further frustration and unsuccessful attempts to migrate just my W7 OS to the SSD, I went to the office (fast connection) and downloaded your beta. lt...

Re: troubles booting dual boot cloned with with easeus todo backup

Well I think the problem is resolved, sort of. I was going to give up and just migrate windows to the new drive and reinstall mint. Since all of my files are in a separate partition that should be easy, if I can figure out a free and easy way to migrate windows. Plus, something happened to the...

Re: troubles booting dual boot cloned with with easeus todo backup

By copying the first MB on a legacy drive, it not only copies grub but also the partition table. Did you make any changes to the partitions on either the source drive or target drive after you had tried cloning the drive with easus? That would be one explanation. There may have been some minor chan...

Re: troubles booting dual boot cloned with with easeus todo backup

Or if you can have both drives plugged in at the same time: sudo dd if=/dev/sdX of=/dev/sdY bs=1M count=1 Make sure you get sdX and sdY correct, get it wrong and you could wipe the partition table on that drive. I tried this and at least I'm stuck at a new place. :D It copied over but when I tried ...

Re: troubles booting dual boot cloned with with easeus todo backup

Or I could get a 420 that supports UEFI but I love the 410 too much I felt that way until I bought a T430*, then ended up buying three of them. We had that conversation in the other thread. I have and hate the 430. But I may come around in a few years if and when 410s are useless. Until then its 41...

Re: troubles booting dual boot cloned with with easeus todo backup

I think your problem is that you have a UEFI install on the drive you cloned on your T430 and the T410 only supports legacy boot.If you put it back in your T430 I think you will find that it will boot. I've got several T430 and was trying to troubleshoot a T410 on the forum last week. Yup. That was...

[SOLVED]troubles booting dual boot cloned with with easeus todo backup

I cloned my 320 gb HDD (dual boot W10-Mint Cinn 19.1) to a 250 GB Crucial SSD. I used Easeus todo backup, and it was pretty simple. I did not make a bootable USB during the process, although that option was offered. Not being that bright, I wasn't sure if I would have to use it every time I booted (...

Re: remove "read only"(write protection) from pendrive

By the way, if the above tests still show it's in read-only mode, can you try remounting in rw? Via the terminal, of course. xD Using this command: sudo mount -o remount,rw /dev/sdh1 where sdh1 is again whatever is applicable to your setup. I had a very similar problem that was solved by using this...

Re: windows 10 dual boot issues

Can I just clone the T430 drive as is and transfer it to my 410 and use F12 on those rare occasions I use Windows, or am I going to run into other boot problems? F12 does nothing on the 410 currently, with windows 7 installed Yes, with buts... You will need a usb to sata cable for the clone and the...

Re: windows 10 dual boot issues

Since I am planning to ditch this computer You can't do that, it's a Thinkpad T430, they're wonderful :D Seriously, there is quite a lot you can do to pimp up a T430, I've got SSDs in all of mine, put an i7-3632 in one, replaced the 1366x768 screen in another with 1600x900 glossy. Backup HDDs in th...

Re: windows 10 dual boot issues

Well the most important thing is that I found Windows 10 again and can get back into it. Since I am planning to ditch this computer anyway I'm not sure I want to spend any time "fixing" it. I only use Windows for ArcGis, and I only use that sporadically. It would be nice to have the grub menu though...

Re: windows 10 dual boot issues

Okay, so that is showing a UEFI install = GPT partition table and EFI partition. So what is test -d /sys/firmware/efi && echo efi || echo bios showing in mint and can you boot into win to check the outcome of the EDIT in my previous post? EDIT - no need to use a remote imaging site for most screens...

Re: windows 10 dual boot issues

Did you install windows and mint in legacy or UEFI mode? You might have a mixed installation - one in legacy the other in UEFI. If you press F12 at the lenovo splash screen to get the boot menu does windows appear there and does it work? In mint, in a terminal sudo update-grub . Reboot do you get a...
