How to grant permissions

I installed a media app on my deskstop running LM193. I get the following message when I enter the path to my media files: For Linux on Arch Linux, CentOS, Debian, Fedora, openSUSE, or Ubuntu, you must grant the service user at least read access to your storage locations. The media storage is on a U...

Re: Problem with Permissions - SOLVED

Not familiar with mxlinux specifically ( if you tell me what version it is I can run it in VBox to see what's up - when I get a free moment ) but all you should need is to have avahi running on both systems. In Ubuntu / Debian / Mint: sudo service avahi-daemon status If it's not running start it: s...

Re: Problem with Permissions

So first, thank you for the very clear explanation.
The client is a laptop running mxlinux and using the suggestion of smb://192.168.0.xxx worked perfectly.
Is there a way I can change the host to something smaller?
With respect to my original issue I will mark my post as solved.

Re: Problem with Permissions

So far none of the suggestions have changed anything. Is it possible I need to do something to my root account or my file system drive?
The warning still exists and I cannot see my desktop computer or the usb drive from any other computer on my local network.

Re: Problem with Permissions

I used this terminal command to set the permissions "sudo chmod -R 777 /media/guy/'Samsung sdg'" It should be sudo chown -Rc $USER /media/guy/"Samsung sdg" I read chown --help but don't understand how the command string cures the sharing error. I already am the owner of every file on the drive, doe...

Is guy also your username? For security reasons, /media mounts can't be shared regardless of permissions.
guy is my user name. Does changing the drives mount point cure my problem?

Re: Fix broken packages fails

Made a rookie error on booting with an older kernal, my grub screen only displayed ver 5 kernals using the down arrow exposed the ver. 4 kernals. I tried different kernals w/o any success.I'm considering just re-installing Mint and starting fresh. I have a separate partition Home and I did a backup ...

Re: Fix broken packages fails

grub upgrade found all the kernals I posted previously , e.g. 4.ver but upon reboot they don't show up. All that shows up is the 5. versions.

Any suggestions, I still am dealing the broken handbrake files stopping the upgrades and maybe using a 4.ver kernal could help.

Re: Fix broken packages fails

This is the message at the end of the listing "grub-mkconfig: You must run this as root" when I ran the command string you suggested "sudo update-initramfs -uk all ; update-grub "

Should I run "sudo grub-mkconfig"? If so, should it be done in a particular directory?

Somewhat confused. I opened Synaptic, selected Custom Filter and then selected Broken. Nothing happened. What was the expected result, should something have populated another area of Synaptic?
