Re: Unexpected behaviour: with reasonable settings, auto-refresh may only ever run after boot.

What is being refreshed? APT cache) " That might be "as designed" behavior"; file /etc/cron.daily/apt-compat says # We want to randomize the apt update and unattended-upgrade # runs as much as possible to avoid hitting the mirrors all at the # same time. The systemd time is better at this than the ...

Re: Unexpected behaviour: with reasonable settings, auto-refresh may only ever run after boot.

What is being refreshed? From update manager information "07.08@09:49 ++ Starting refresh " doesn't update the cache and is only a reminder of whether previous updates have been applied. The one that matters, which is long delayed after resume, is e.g. "07.08@12:44 ++ Starting refresh (including re...

Unexpected behaviour: with reasonable settings, auto-refresh may only ever run once after boot.

Linux Mint 18.2 XFCE etc. After resuming from hibernate or suspend, auto-refresh seems to be reset to about half the user set auto-refresh time, no matter how long the computer has been hibernated/suspended. This isn't really a problem with the default times, but if e.g. auto-refresh is set to 24hou...

Re: An NSA-derived ransomware worm is shutting down computers worldwide

The real criminals in this story are the NHS people. Running XP 2 years after it was killed by Microsoft is a crime. I hope some top management will be sued for this. If these criminals had decided not to support an inadequate system when there were inadequate resources to upgrade it, the resultant...

Re: updating TOMTOM GO

I looked into this recently with the same hope and it's basically impossible unless you're at least as good a programmer as the wine developers.

I retain winxp solely for tomtom.
(I previously found tomtom on win8 easy to install and not worth the substantial effort on win7 professional).

Re: Lightweight distros for old computers

There's also the lxle approach: a massive distro of light programs with a light desktop. Even fairly ancient machines generally have ample disk space; after installation the size of the distro doesn't matter. I only stopped using lxle as I (subjectively) didn't like the desktop. Here on mint 18 Sara...

[Solved]jedit 5.3 problem

I recently installed jedit 5.3.0 with synaptic and found there were no available plugins. It seems the plugins have been reconfigured to only work with jedit 5.4 :( From http://jedit-community.sourceforge.net/ Use of a new XML format for Plugin Manager, and proper following of redirects, resulting i...

Re: have HP 1010 printer; don't understand directions

You could try searching for and installing djtools in synaptic package manager and then run 'configure printer' - your printer is an option.
I'm on mint 18 but I'd expect your printer to be on 17.
I'll describe other options if that doesn't work.
