Re: What's the smartest way to multiboot?

Don't bother.....just install Linux. It works. If you need Windows, though I don't know why, buy a Windows PC and be done with it. If you need Linux a Mint Box will do nicely. Dual boot seems a waste of resources. I echo MintyO's disagreement too. Some people still need Windows for certain types of...

Re: What does it mean when live cd install can''t see OS?

I can turn raid off in the BIOS and then I suppose I shall never be able to boot xp again, which is no loss. Especially once I have installed a far superior and ten years newer mint 18! WIth a system this complicated, I suppose I must wipe out the whole xp installation. But there does seem to be a ...

Re: What does it mean when live cd install can''t see OS?

is RAID a problem in mint installs or is there some special procedure to obviate this partman error message? There is a tutorial here https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=210439 You will need recovery software to turn off raid in the BIOS as it says in the previous link because in a RA...

Re: What does it mean when live cd install can''t see OS?

Is this a RAID system? It might be :?: I wonder what the model is. Found https://us.en.kb.sony.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/31152/p/48903,49902,71345,71351/c/65,66/kw/RAID but not sure if it covers this situation. I do know from past experience that XP and Linux can be forced to get along but XP won...

Re: What does it mean when live cd install can''t see OS?

Sounds easy but a whole problem with this system is that it's 300gb C drive comprises TWO 149gb Fujitsu hdds! And I cant figure out what is on which of them. Or can I assume that if XP boots properly and seems work largely OK, there is nothing on the catastrophically partitioned HDD? Two hard drive...

"Cn I really shrink partitions to their proper size using Disk Management while working on them in windows" If you can boot to XP as administrator, yes you can. If you can boot and you haven't de-fragged in a while you may want to run disk cleanup first. Did you have a recovery partition on the driv...

Re: What does it mean when live cd install can''t see OS?

Can you still boot XP? It's been a while but as mentioned above you need to do your disk preparation in XP using computer management or manage disks. Boot to XP, open computer management/disk management and select your disk and check the options. You will have to shrink your partition and then creat...

Re: Should I upgrade to the most recent Kernel?

Try 4.8.0-34 the latest available from Mint Update. I am running KDE 18.1 and it's stable on my hardware circa 2009 with latest BIOS update 2011 Quirky.

@Clem - While I appreciate the new version, I have a newer laptop with a Skylake chipset. When can we expect a release with a 4.8 kernel to improve support for these specific chipsets and hardware? Believe me, this isn't a slight against the existing versions, I've just got wireless issues with my ...

My humble opinion but 5 just has a WAYS TO GO! You will need to resolve yourself to that if you want to run it....the way of the world? It will improve in time. Plasma 4 is mature and 5 is still in the development stages. Regards.

Re: [SOLVED] Re: Mint 18 Install Killed Trackpad

Thanks all. I downloaded and installed a new ISO, this time allowing Update Manager to install the three "dangerous" kernel updates. That seems to have done the trick. I have used the newer kernels but am currently using 4.4.0-21.37. Kernel updates are considered security updates but can cause stab...
