Re: Linux Mint will not start

As per your previous posts Arch_Enemy : Three things: 1. After trying the GRUB2 runlevel 3 idea, I was not able to get level 3 or 2-5 to work. But eventually I tried level 1 and with your startx command from another post, it eventually booted up into what is essentially a live disk environment with...

Re: Why did you decide to install Linux Mint??

Tell us how you REALLY feel :) I still have Winders for Photoshop, iTunes, and games. Gimp is plenty good enough to replace photoshop. ... This is very true. Of course my photo editing skills is very basic, but GIMP lets me do everything I did with Photoshop: - Curves / exposure adjustment - Retouc...

Three contrasting songs - same singer. This girl is incredibly talented. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GSVPvCy3Yg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTcvvO6B3Io https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hli1fuk8zQQ Reminds me of Jackie Evancho, when Howie Mandel asked her "Did you swallow a woman?!?!" Amazing.

Re: Firefox new tab page "suggestions"

Hi Arch_Enemy & RIH: Yeah, the "hover" thing works...it will be interesting to see if any of those sites come back from the dead. I guess the trick to selecting permanent icons is you have to wait for the ones you want to appear so you can "pin" them. But hey, I got the "Forums" one! Thanks Well, t...

Well, "all good" minus that you now no doubt find to be all of a sudden limited to approximately 30 MB/s.
Yeah, but you have to understand, before he was getting ZERO MB/s...

Re: external Hard drive not "seen", no access to contents

Hi. My external hard drive (WD Elements - NTFS) is now invisible to my desktop PC, since LM upgrade from 17.1 to 19.1 (Cinnamon). Hard disk also not listed in return to "lsusb". Any suggestions, please? Thank you. Are you plugging a USB 3 HDD into a USB 3 port? Silly human! Seriously, some drives h...

Re: Safety of Linux Mint

Thank you for all the answers! Of course I'm aware there's no such thing as perfect security. I just try to figure out where the greatest impacts are to estimate the best way to go, and since I heard a lot of bad stuff about Canonical and their way for Ubuntu it worried me the most. Don't want to m...

Re: When did you come to Linux?

I am contemplating an Arch partition in future. I would probably never switch over to something like that full time - it would more be just a project to learn from. The awesomeness of Linux as a desktop operating system is a hugely well kept secret If you want to forage into Arch and have a more pl...

Re: Safety of Linux Mint

And, I think UFW is installed by default. If you want to "see" what you're doing you can install GUFW for a graphical interface, and with a small amount of reading can lock in or out anything you want to. Caveat: one setting in GUFW, when selected, will lock out port 8080, and there goes your web br...

Re: Graphic card nvidia or intel

Ah. Thanks.

But you have to install the nVidia driver, and then nVidia settings, and use settings to change the GPU. Got it.

Re: Firefox new tab page "suggestions"

Hover over the tile of whatever sites you don't want to appear in the recommendations. an ellipses (...) appears. Click on that, and hack away to your heart's content! You can Pin it so it always stays in the same place; I <think> you can 'promote' certain sites to different locations and then pin t...

Re: Graphic card nvidia or intel

Hmmm.... I stopped using Thinkpads years ago, so I am not familiar with current models, so I am not familiar to know how to switch from one to the other. You probably have a GPU inside your CPU, and it's probably running by default. In Windows you can pick which one to use; I don't know how to do th...

Re: Safety of Linux Mint

Oh, you're right. Didn't noticed it as an own distro, thought it'd be just another desktop manager... Thanks for the hint. Well, technically you probably can add PPAs, it's just always complaining after doing so like Debian I guess? I have had far, far more issues adding PPAs than anything e...

Re: Graphic card nvidia or intel

According to Lenovo's specifications, your Thinkpad has nVidia graphics, so, if you have not installed the nVidia driver, you must be running Nouveau for a graphics driver, and that would have loaded by default.

Re: Graphic card nvidia or intel

I am using Thinkpad P51 with Ubuntu 18.04 and I want to switch to Linux Mint. As I understand cinnamon is best for modern graphic card, so I will use this version. My question is regarding graphic card. With ubuntu I use intel because I try to avoid proprietary software. However, using intel my bat...

And then, as if by magic, he was back. No reload required... To the OP, here's what you want to try. As mentioned above... Start the system, and after the BIOS loads hold down the left shift key to bring up the GRUB menu. Pick an entry, either the newer kernel or the older one. It sounds like they'r...

Re: Linux Mint will not start

BTW, if someone else want to try this, you hold down the left shift key as it's booting, pick a boot option from the menu, and press e to edit the grub entry, then press F10 to boot from the modification.
