<SOLVED> Mint suddenly died on me.

So I'm suddenly having some pretty serious issues with my HTPC right now. A short while ago, I opened up Nemo to see the error message A problem has been detected with your thumbnail cache. Fixing it will require administrative privileges. Clicking the "Fix" button and typing in my passwor...

Re: Funky printing issues in Mint 20 with Epson WF R4640

What else is needed to help me with this? I really can't figure out what's going on and having to print 20 individual pages instead of just being able to tell it to print 20 copies is maddening. Please.

Funky printing issues in Mint 20 with Epson WF R4640

Hi guys. This issue only started once I followed the upgrade path from 19.3 to 20. I'm using Cinnamon DE and this Epson WF R4640 is connected via the office wifi. I'm actually having two strange problems with the printer, which I think are related in some way; probably drivers. The first is that any...

Re: Strange window focus issue

Well, I never got a chance to try plugging a different mouse into my computer to see if that was the problem. After upgrading to Mint 20, this is no longer a problem.

Re: Timeshift - "Snapshot" size?

I imagine it depends on the size of your installation. Previous to trying the Mint 20 upgrade path, my snapshots were only about 4GB or so. Once I had done the upgrade and decided to try and restore my snapshot, I made another snapshot and for some reason I think that one was closer to 10GB.

Re: Case fans going nuts

This issue seemed to have fixed itself after switching GPU drivers, so maybe it was the GPU fan and not the case fan that was going bonkers. However, I did what you suggested anyway just because why not? Doesn't seem to have broken anything. All good.

Thanks for the response.

Re: Timeshift is a sad joke

Here's my backup and restore method I used before upgrading from 19.2 to 20, and then reverting back to 19.3: Boot another OS or a LiveMedia, then: cp -ax /the/OS/* /some/directory/on-another/partition/. After that, you can do incremental backups with (g)rsync is you want to... To restore the OS cp...

Re: Timeshift is a sad joke

I do not and have never used Timeshift but feel/felt it makes for some conceptual sense at least, and what I did see of it didn't look like essentially bad. As to how resilient it is in practice wrt. possibly ill-defined starting situations or the like you seem to now know more about than I do... M...

<solved> Case fans going nuts

So, I've upgraded to Mint 20 and now my case fans won't stop blasting away at max RPM. This never happened in Mint 19.3 or any other version of Mint. Only started happening when I booted into live Mint 20 and I figured it would be fine once it was installed and some updates were applied. I was wrong...

Re: Timeshift is a sad joke

You're probably right. I've decided against even trying my second snapshot and I'm fresh installing Mint 20 right now. The saddest part of all this is that the first time I ran the upgrade it probably worked just fine except for the fact that it broke Chromium. If I had been made aware that Chromium...

<Solved> Timeshift is a sad joke

I've never used Timeshift. That is, until I decided to upgrade to Mint 20 from 19.3. The one time I decided to use Timeshift and make a snapshot just in case something went sideways during an upgrade, all it did was break things more than they were already broken. Before I began the upgrade path to ...

Re: Does anyone have any experience with Noson?

So it turns out that it isn't possible to mount the drive as I was expecting. However, it is possible to create symlink to pretty much the same effect. Unfortunately, Noson still couldn't detect the local library like that. In order to get Noson to detect the local library, I had to reconfigure the ...

Re: Does anyone have any experience with Noson?

As I understand it, in the systems default music folder like /home/user/Music. If it's possible and/or a good idea to mount an external usb hard drive to that is above my knowledge, maybe someone else can help? I guess I'll just have to give it a try the next time I head out to my old man's place. ...

Re: Does anyone have any experience with Noson?

So the local library has to be in a certain, preconfigured location? That doesn't make any sense, and could be quite problematic if true. My dad's MP3 library is located on an external USB hard drive and I'm not sure if there is an effective way to mount the music folder on said external USB HDD to ...

Re: Does anyone have any experience with Noson?

Sorry. I figured Sonos would be relatively well known. It's a music player service that allows you to play a bunch of internet radio stations as well as a local music library. I think you need to buy one of their speakers to use it and it creates a "Sonos Zone"...or something. I don't know...

<Solved>Does anyone have any experience with Noson?<Solved>

So I'm trying to convert my old man to Linux since I built him a new computer and his Windows 7 has expired. I've dual booted his "new" machine (i7 920, 16gb DDR3, 120GB SSD. Geforce 210) with Windows 10 and Mint 19.3 Cinnamon. He uses Sonos a lot and it's hard to convince him to switch to...
