Re: Lost external monitor high resolution

Update : it is now working again, although I haven't changed anything (except the monitor resolution, of course) : no system update or anything.
Thanks again for your help. I am marking this thread solved and will be crossing fingers it does not happen again.

[Solved] Lost external monitor high resolution

Hello everybody. For some unknown reason, I cannot have any more my external monitor working with a high resolution (1920x1080). I cannot fathom why. The highest resolution I can apply now is 1280x720. Higher resolutions are listed in the available choices but when applied, the monitor's screen stay...

Re: Lost sound with Firefox on LMDE3

Amazing ! :D
It worked immediately.
Firefox was not showing up when I opened Pavu but as soon as I played a web page with some audio content, it did and I just had to unmute it.

[solved] Lost sound with Firefox on LMDE3

Hello. I am running LMDE 3 and suddenly, Firefox does not play any more sound at all. No webradio, no sound on video streaming (YouTube, Netflix, Vimeo) and no sound when doing File > Open > any mp3 file. I tried running FF in safe mode. No change. I uninstalled and reinstalled it. No change. I ran ...

Wysiwyg HTML editor for LMDE 3 ?

Hello. I'm looking for a Wysiwyg HTML editor for LMDE 3, preferably something light (I'll only have a few web pages to create : HTML and CSS). There is none available through the software manager. I have been using SeaMonkey but it is quite limited. Bluegriffon can be installed but does not run. Bra...

Re: GUI freezes when connecting external monitor

Actually, I found out that it works ok if I plug in the external screen before booting the computer.
The resolution is stuck to 1920x1080 but that's another concern.

Re: GUI freezes when connecting external monitor

Hello, I have the exact same problem with a Dell Latitude E6530 running LMDE 3. My current kernel is : $ uname -a Linux geometrix 4.9.0-12-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.210-1 (2020-01-20) x86_64 GNU/Linux I had a look at the available kernels base in this page's instructions : ~$ apt-cache search linux-im...

Re: Unwanted notifications (ads)

I still have these notification ads, despite the previous taken measures. And they also open when Firefox is closed.
I clicked a couple of them to see where they would send me and it was Reddit.

Hi. I already used some of them. Didn't know about Google Container, though. I am giving it a try. Thanks.

Re: Unwanted notifications (ads)

Seems like it's coming from your browser. Which one are you using? That seems the most likely hypothesis. I haven't thought about it. I use Firefox and most certainly the add-ons are to be incriminated. I use several of them. I just disabled a couple of them (video downloaders - most likely to be t...

Unwanted notifications (ads)

Hello. I used LM 19.1 Cinnamon and I have unwanted notifications showing up from time to time (they look like commercial ads, or results from sports) - basically things I don't want and never asked for. I cannot see any installed program that would be responsible for this. How can I know from which ...

Re: [Solved] Dropbox not working any more on Cinnamon ext4

There is a new workaround : https://www.linuxuprising.com/2018/11/h ... -ext4.html
It worked for me with LM 18 XFCE and LMDE 3.

Encrypting home folder with eCryptfs

I found out what I needed and it has nothing to do with Calamares. I simply need to run the ecryptfs-migrate-home tool to encrypt my home folder. Documentation & tutorials :https://www.lifewire.com/should-you-encrypt-home-folder-2202069 The last step that was difficult to work out was obtaining ...

Re: using Calamares for encryption : where is it ?

I believe I had to install it first. From the terminal: sudo apt install calamares calamares Yes, indeed. Actually, I found out that the version of the iso image of LMDE that was using worked this way (you must install first Calamares in the live session) but that the latest version of LMDE does in...

[Solved] Encrypting home folder with eCryptfs

Hello to all. I am trying to install LMDE 3 Cinnamon (this part works fine and out-of-the-box) but with home encryption, or if not available, full-disk encryption. The LMDE 3 release notes state that "An alternative installer, called Calamares, is available in the application menu. This install...

Re: Dropbox not working any more on Cinnamon ext4

I found the (new) workaround :

it seems that Dropbox considers all user folders inside /home to be encrypted.

So I created a /home-unecrypted/my_username folder and moved the Dropbox folder there and it works now.

Re: Dropbox not working any more on Cinnamon ext4

The symlink is on an encrypted filesystem. Yes, but the symlink is only used by the human user (me) to access the folder, not by Dropbox itself: the folder has been moved or so it should be. I am trying to check out if this is indeed the case. But I cannot find in which config file the Dropbox fold...
