Re: Encryption, sensible or not?

Then one you can look at is running your web browser in a security sandbox. Something like firejail (I have a tutorial https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=202735). That limits what the web browser can do so if you end up on a web page with some malware at most it can try and mess up your w...

Re: Encryption, sensible or not?

I am the only user of my lap. Well, you, and the thief or honest finder that gets your "lap" after you. That I would feel is in fact the main reason to use encryption for regular users. If you use the laptop in in fact mobile manner, chances that you at some point will forget it somewhere or that i...

Re: Encryption, sensible or not?

I am the only user of my lap. I am connected to the internet, nothing else. I want to be as certain as possible, that I can't be hacked and that I don't get crapware on my lap, especially since I use internet banking. I don't think that encrypting (part of) my computer is of use to me. So I leave it...

Encryption, sensible or not?

When you install Linux Mint, you can choose to encrypt, everything, home or nothing. The encryption slows down, your system. Is it necessery or desirable to encrypt your system (partially). Linux has the reputation of being fairly safe and usually your router has a firewall and if not so you can tur...

Re: Easy Launch VPN script help

I have about the same problem, but after the openvpn is running, I can close the shell and openvpn keeps running. I use FreeVPN.me and start it by: sudo openvpn --config FreeVPN.me-TCP443.ovpn then I get prompted for the rootpassw, after that I get prompted for a userid, after that I get prompted fo...

In Synaptic Package Manager...

Re: Mint 18 beta + Tor

I use Mint 17.3 and installed Tor by opening a shell by ctrl-alt-T and executing: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:upubuntu-com/tor64 sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install tor-browser sudo chown $USER -Rv /usr/bin/tor-browser/ If you get an error on: sudo chown $USER -Rv /usr/bin/tor-browser/ You shou...

Re: Mint 18 and Brother scanner

It might be the 40-libsane.rules: Open a shell/terminal by ctrl-alt-T execute: sudo gedit /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules Then enter the following 2 lines just before the line LABEL="libsane_rules_end": # Brother scanners ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes" Save the file and resta...

Re: Kernel update no longer in Mint Update Manager?

I did an overkill and by completely new installing Mint, than updated with the udate manager instead of an update by apt-get, then did post-install I always do. Then everything was okay again. A pity I didn't read the suggestion about mint-kernel-info earlier. It would be nice to see if that was the...

Re: Browser Suggestions

I use Chromium, but if you prefer firefox, you can speed it up a bit: lick the Firefox menu button (3 dashes, right on top of the screen) - click "Preferences" - Tab Privacy - Item Tracking: change to: "Tell sites that I do not want to be tracked" - Item History: change to: "Firefox will: Use custom...

Kernel update no longer in Mint Update Manager?

I update my kernel by using theMints "Update Manager". Now I can't. The possibility has dissapeared or must be done in another way. What I used to do: 1. I opened the Update Manager; 2. I selected the menu View; 3.I selected the submenu considering kernels; 4.I selected the menu the desired kernel a...

Re: Mint 18 and Brother scanner

I have a brother all-in-one printer and I use Mint 17.3. I managed to get the scanning done by scanning from the computer. How that has to be installed is described in the support section from Brother. Make sure, that you find all the preconditions. They are a bit scattered through the support pages...

Firmware update Brother printer.

I have a Brother DCP-9105CDW. At the site of Brother they advise to update the firmware of the printer. However their is only the possibility to do this for Windows and Mac. Of course I could try to do it by using Wine, but I hate have Wine on my computer. Even if I de-install Wine after I have upgr...
