Re: Clean up old kernels

Btw, now that there's a "branch" of 4.4 and 4.8 kernels in mint 18.1, what does purge-old-kernels do in this situation? Get rid of all the 4.4 kernels before evaluating the 4.8 ones? That would seem reasonable but potentially not desired since you may want the latest "LTS" kernel... Why use purge-o...

Re: Transparent proxy? Help, please, no takers?

I'm not sure if disabling ipv6 is relevant? That depends on the proficiency of the VPN provider and how they route ipv6 traffic (or if they disable routing as well.) My method above disables ipv6 at the system level so there's no chance of a ipv6 leak as described. Follow the instructions again and...

Re: Needing ctrl-alt-del for Linux

If you're simply looking for the system monitor/task manager, setting up a keyboard shortcut is also easy enough. Here's the custom setting in xfce:
sysmon1.png
In mate, the command would instead be mate-system-monitor.

Re: Transparent proxy? Help, please, no takers?

Disable ipv6 at the grub level by following "method 2" on this site: http://www.binarytides.com/disable-ipv6-ubuntu/ (note: instead of "sudo gedit /etc/default/grub", use gksu xdg-open /etc/default/grub ) Follow the instructions and come back with the results. And a small note on disabling geo.enabl...

Re: Hauppauge TV tuner 950Q

I was under the impression that Hauppauge is one of the few manufacturers that even have Linux support as they seem to be popular in the raspberry pi arena. (Confirmed by the LinuxTV page as well.) I was doing some shopping around a month ago, but it seems like if you want a hassle-free tv experienc...

Re: Possible bug in LM Mate 18.1 notification system

I noticed this as well. Some notifications literally come in with html tags like <b>this is a news headline</b> Does anyone know how to enable pop-up notification sounds on mate? There's gotta be a hack somewhere, possibly a running python script in the background that will play a custom sound on sy...

Re: How To - Simple File Sharing in Mint

A small update on this, sharing (transferring files) from Mint to Lubuntu with identical settings also had positive results on my end. I installed Lubuntu on my netbook some time ago that only has a 100Mbps ethernet port (and wireless-N) but still produces a consistent 10MB/s share over a local ethe...

Re: Can't watch Hulu/Yahoo videos in FF 50

I noticed the same episode on Hulu itself prompts you to enable DRM, enable flash, be in the US only, start watching only with a 'free trial', and not use any VPNs. Seems like Hitchcock's dream is Stallman's nightmare.

Re: Can't watch Hulu/Yahoo videos in FF 50

Looks like Adobe finally pushed out "release" version 24 on their main download page yesterday. The "labs" site still list version 24 as "beta." Looks like someone over there at Adobe needs to get their act together. If you didn't install the beta, the update should come down through the updater as ...

Re: Clean up old kernels

So here I'd issue a command like... sudo apt-get remove linux-headers-4.4.0-51 linux-headers-4.4.0-51-generic linux-image-4.4.0-51-generic linux-image-extra-4.4.0-51-generic remove != purge so you may simply end up with these kernels in the residual config section in synaptic (waiting for a "comple...

Re: Mint ISO torrent hosting saying "Tracker gave HTTP response code 301 (Moved Permanently)"

Transmission should verify already-downloaded data and start seeding if the hashes check out. Just set the "download" folder to the correct location where the ISOs are located, and then re-download the associated .torrent files for each version.

Re: [SOLVED] MInt 18 steam does not work

Btw for those of you testing on 18.1, I had to use the fix twice, but it's still the same fix (at least in mate.) I decided to skip the Ubuntu repo this time and just download the latest deb from the steam site. After gdebi finishes installing, open a terminal and use the fix immediately, then (stil...

Re: [SOLVED] Can video reel on thumbnails be turned off?

I did more testing on this because I was curious on the image duplications and found some more interesting properties. The thumbnailer will only accept the png border with transparency information. This means at least 1 pixel needs to be transparent or else the entire thumbnail fails to render. The ...

Re: Can video reel on thumbnails be turned off?

How do I create a transparent image in Gimp? And should it only be 1 pixel? The original image size is 9 x 35. Really simple, open Gimp, chose file -> new, use these settings (be sure to click "advanced"): gimp-new.png click ok -> then do a ctrl+shift+e keyboard shortcut to export the image, name i...

Re: Can video reel on thumbnails be turned off?

And just for the sake of testing I rm'd the file to see what would happen. Caja didn't seem to mind, new videos are being parsed without the reel border and without errors (at least not in the syslog, but may be elsewhere)...but I don't know if the rendering is taking a small fraction of time slower...
