Re: Problems with using tr cmd in bash script.

This is how I have done the same thing: #!/bin/bash # printf "\n\tRemoving spaces from --->ALL<--- file names in current path $(pwd)\n\n" printf "\t" read -p "Press Enter to continue (Ctrl-C to quit) " junk find . -type f | while read i do mv -v "$i" "${i// /_}" 2>/dev/null done

Re: Canon PIXMA 922 and Mint 19

I use the drivers and ScanGear app from Canon's web site. Get them at https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/printers/inkjet-multifunction/mx-series-inkjet/mx922#Z7_MQH8HIC0L88RB0AMD0F1Q42K25 if you have not already done so. Select Operating System Linux, not Linux 64 or 3...

Re: Canon PIXMA 922 and Mint 19

My first question would be is it connected via USB or LAN?

I have this very printer connected to my LAN and 3 Mint 19 Cinnamon PCs work with it just fine, both printing and scanning.

Re: Not so Luckybackup in mint 19

I am using "luckyBackup 0.4.9 (using Qt)" on Mint 19 Cinnamon with no issues backing up "/".

Actually, I am still using the profiles I was using with Mint 18.3, one for my home directory run as me and one for "/" run as root.

Thanks upuv.
Very informative information. This explains some of the DNS issues I saw after I upgraded to Mint 19.

Re: Some handy command line aliases

A few of my favorites:

alias drives='lsblk -p -o Model,Name,Size,fstype,Label,UUID,Mountpoint -x name'
alias lsroot='find ~ -user root -exec ls -lad {} \;'
alias partitions='sudo parted -l && sudo blkid -o list'
alias specs='inxi -Fxz'

lsroot finds files owned by root in your home directory

Might I suggest, for troubleshooting purposes, disable the firewall if you are running one.

Re: IF THEN to check expressvpn status

I am an expressvpn user. For @Sugarcrisp there is a panel app called "VPN Look-Out" if your are using the Cinnamon desktop. It does what you are trying to do and much more. NOTE: The "expressvpn status" command always returns zero ( 0 ) for an exit code. Here is the output of "disconnected" status: ...

Re: Updates that requre restart

Another option might be to install debian-goodies so that you can run checkrestart after upgrades to determine which services are using old versions of libraries and need restarting.

Re: trying to set up a bash script and applet for expressvpn

I had to modify the applet.js for newer versions of Cinnamon. Try the one below" const Applet = imports.ui.applet; const Lang = imports.lang; const Mainloop = imports.mainloop; const GLib = imports.gi.GLib; const UUID = "expressvpn@jon"; const REFRESH_INTERVAL = 5 function log(message) { global.log(...

Re: Updatedb.mlocate: what's it good for? how to deactivate it?

updatedb and locate are the associated commands Both commands are standard linux commands. I believe both are in the core Linux Mint OS install I think most of your questions can be answered using the man command man updatedb and man locate A little googling produces a nice tutorial at https://www.t...

Re: tp-link t4u usb wireless adapter

I don't recall if this is included in the source but here is a script I use every time I update the kernel to add the driver to the new kernel. You can also use it for the initial build of the driver. #!/bin/bash # If not root exit if [[ $EUID -ne 0 ]]; then echo "This script must be run as root" ex...

Re: tp-link t4u usb wireless adapter

no realtek That's because "Bus 001 Device 004: ID 2357:0101" 2357:0101 is not defined in /var/lib/usbutils/usb.ids. If you want lsusb to show some information you will have to add it in the right sequence to /var/lib/usbutils/usb.ids. This is what I added: 2357 TP-Link 0101 RTL8812AU Archer T4U Not...

For a native Linux app you might try Etcher https://etcher.io/
It's an AppImage app. Nothing to install. Just download and execute.

Re: UEFI Boot ISO from disk - possible?

Thanks for those clues. They got me googling in the right spots. I did not have to install grml-rescueboot. Ultimately the solution was found using the grub command ls. At the grub boot menu I pressed c and entered the ls command. This showed me the boot disk as grub sees it. The solution was simple...

[Solved] UEFI Boot ISO from disk - possible?

I was able to do this just fine on my old BIOS system. My new system has UFEI boot. I dual boot Windows 7 and Linux Mint my daily driver. Both installed in UEFI mode. I have searched and googled but I cannot find a solution that works that allows me to boot an ISO directly from hard disk via the gru...

If you have a firewall enabled disable it and see if that makes a difference. That may give some clues.
