Suddenly I see asterisks when typing my password?

Asterisks have begun to appear when I type my password. It did not use to be like this. It seems like random on/off behaviour since a week or so. Mostly off but today on, despite several reboots. Have I touched something I shouldn't?

Re: partman throws error when trying to install

Is there anything else I would do well to think about and prepare for? I think you might be barking up the wrong tree. Without being accusatory in any way whatsoever, it seems that many people have the expectation that a modern operating system should run on older equipment. It doesn't always work ...

partman throws error when trying to install

Hi, I promised my sister to come over yesterday and install Tara Cinnamon on an old PC previously running Win XP and Debian Wheezy. It's got hardware from around 2010 (Core2 Quad Q9550 64-bit, mobo escapes my memory). It has one Intel SSD and two Samsung HDDs. Booting into the Live-USB is no problem...

rsync: implications of copying symlinks as links?

If my purpose is to create backups of projects that should run as normal if they have to be restored from said backup, is it 'safe' to let rsync copy symlinks as links (--links) or are there any gotchas to be aware of? I admit I use npm/node (somewhat blindly, because it works :-) ) and there are al...

Be careful with installing .deb files, especially if they need newer runtimes than Mint provides.
Are you saying this from a security point of view, or simply because things might break or not work?

Gigantic flatpak

So I needed a code editor and checked to see what version of Brackets is in the repos for Mint 19, if any. I found v1.13 in a flatpak, but lo and behold, it is 1 GB in download and requires 3 GB of disk space. Slightly aghast, I did as always, went to the developer's site and downloaded the *.deb, w...

Re: can't chown files in mounted directory?

If the share allows write but the Linux permissions of the folder being shared on the NAS does not then it's up to the NAS to correct it not the client. But in that case (which appears reasonable to me), I fail to see the purpose of adding dir_mode=0777,file_mode=0777,nounix to fstab? Would it not ...

Re: can't chown files in mounted directory?

Hi and thanks!
But what if the permissions on the NAS for everyone is read only, can I override that with local mount options to allow everyone to write? Can anyone pull this off or is it dependent on the NAS counterpart of my local user to have ownership of those files/directories?

[SOLVED] can't chown files in mounted directory?

Hi, I should have graduated from permissions university by now, but this one I have never got my head around. I'd be happy if some kind soul could elucidate me. I mount a directory from a share on my NAS at boot with this fstab entry: //10.0.0.50/hibou /home/peter/hibou cifs vers=2.1,user,uid=peter,...

NFS network share, I can mount it but not write to it although I am owner

I am grappling with this since several hours, but I think I am out of ideas. I have a NAS with an NFS share 'dev' that I am trying to mount to /media/freenas/dev and getting write access to my local user. My user 'peter' thus needs to be owner of the mounted files and folders. 'peter' is already own...

use xsetwacom. can be put in startup script. this is mine (pardon the junk in the middle, google xsetwacom for further options): #!/bin/sh # # Custom startup commands # /PETER # WACOM TABLET # xsetwacom requires xorg to be loaded, so commands can't be passed through rc.local # # Set input area to to...

Re: Why, actually, was Thunderbird 60 released without Calendar when there is a compatible version of the extension?

This is how you can get a functional lightning in your Thunderbird 60.2.1. on Mint 19 as well: install xul-ext-lightning from the Ubuntu repos and uninstall any lightning 5.4 extension from inside Thunderbird. Fantastic! So easy. I was very surprised to see that all my calendar data and caldav-conf...

Re: Why, actually, was Thunderbird 60 released without Calendar when there is a compatible version of the extension?

All I can say is LM19 released with Thunderbird 52 and there was no calendar extension included. I'm not using Thunderbird though so I'm not claiming detailed knowledge about its history. ;) Sorry, my mistake. It is included/activated by default only in Thunderbird's Windows version, which is what ...

Re: Why, actually, was Thunderbird 60 released without Calendar when there is a compatible version of the extension?

When are extensions ever pre-packaged? Extensions are optional features, that's why they are extensions and not parts of the core client. Thunderbird allows you to search and install calendar extensions via the Addons menu entry. Well, yes normally, but Calendar is in fact pre-packaged since a few ...

[SOLVED] Why, actually, was Thunderbird60 released without Calendar when there is a compatible version of the extension?

I too regret that the Calendar add-on disappeared with the recent update, but I don't understand why? According to https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/60.2.1/releasenotes/ the Calendar has not been removed from being a default extension in TB. According to https://developer.mozilla.org/en-...

Re: (Solved) Epson Scanner not usable since update to Mint 19 - Pipe error

Update: I just realized VueScan also "comes with" Mint. I will install it and update you on the outcome. Wow, I did not know that! Nice surprise, courtesy of Flatpak integration, it seems. It is a slightly older version though. Actually, when you download from the developer's site it does not need ...
