Re: 14'' laptop for Linux Mint

Yep, that mod has been around for a while, more info on the thinkpad forums. Think you have to buy the boards from China and there is some comment with some about flicker. I'm not bothered, happy with my 1600x900 screen. There seem to be a lot who think the Thinkpad screens (certainly on the T430) ...

Re: 14'' laptop for Linux Mint

Hey everyone, It's been a while but finally I've got round to spending some time looking for a new laptop. At some point I thought 15.6'' might be better than 14'', so I started looking for laptops with that screen size. I realised that in view of my low budget it might be a good idea to look for a ...

Re: <SOLVED> Changing the default terminal text to pre-19 style

coolfatdude's putting it straight. That's exactly what you need to do if you wish to have the old terminal prompt colours back. I was just going to make a post about this showing how to do it. Then I thought I'd better search the forums to see if this had already been solved and I found this thread,...

Re: 14'' laptop for Linux Mint

Perhaps it's time to be very specific, and open a new topic, on a new forum, said topic to be something like, "Any problems with ThinkPads and Mint?" . After all, your original question would possibly be, more appropriately, a candidate for the Newbie Questions and the Hardware Support forums. The ...

Any problems with ThinkPads and Linux Mint?

Hey everyone, following RobertService's recommendation in my last thread, I'm opening this thread to ask you whether any of you can report on problems regarding the use of Linux Mint on ThinkPads. I'm particularly considering getting a T440s or a T430, so these models are the ones to focus on. I'd g...

Re: 14'' laptop for Linux Mint

I'd be tempted by the 440, later model than the 430 and gives you the screen resolution you want. Price is attractive. Hopefully someone else can comment on the ease/difficulty of installing mint on it. See if you can get them to fit a larger SSD, 128G is a bit on the small side. Yeah, I think it's...

Re: 14'' laptop for Linux Mint

I will be the contrarian here: I am a hard core, die-hard Hewlett Packard user. Look for a reasonably priced HP laptop. I had a 13.3" HP Envy that cost $499 (US dollars), it had an i3 CPU, 6 gb of ram, 500 gb HD, and was a nice little system. I lost it during a hurricane when the window leaked, and...

Re: 14'' laptop for Linux Mint

Wow, thanks for the many replies. I greatly appreciate AndyMH's and RobertService's detailed posts, thanks guys! I can clearly see a preference for ThinkPads here. I'm definitely going to make sure to get my hands on one of those. As for the battery life, I might indeed opt for an extended battery. ...

Re: 14'' laptop for Linux Mint

Thanks for your replies, guys! Yeah, it seems like refurbished ThinkPads are always a good idea to take a look at. Don't worry about whether the laptop you're about to mention exists in the EU. I'll just collect all your suggestions and see which ones are available here. But I'm pretty sure that you...

14'' laptop for Linux Mint

Hey everyone, I've been looking for a new laptop to run Linux Mint on for a while. I'll be using it mainly for programming, studies and the usual multimedia tasks. There are some prerequisites it should fulfil, which makes finding an adequate one rather difficult. However, I'm sure some of you will ...

Re: Installation freezes due to "Source ID xxxxx not found when attempting to remove it"

I've finally managed to get it to work. It was a problem a lot of people with Acer laptops have faced. Here's what you need to do: update the BIOS. Unfortunately, this is necessary because I've tried doing all the steps below without updating the BIOS and it didn't work. You don't need to install th...

Re: Installation freezes due to "Source ID xxxxx not found when attempting to remove it"

Did you turn off Secure Boot in the BIOS before attempting the dual installation? I entered the BIOS today and noticed that Secure Boot had already been turned off. I usually do that when I get a new computer. Just out of interest I turned it back on and tried it again, but to no avail. Now I've di...

Re: Installation freezes due to "Source ID xxxxx not found when attempting to remove it"

i've booted a live DVD and run gdisk. Everything seems alright. Here's the output: mint@mint ~ $ sudo gdisk GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 1.0.1 Type device filename, or press <Enter> to exit: /dev/sda Partition table scan: MBR: protective BSD: not present APM: not present GPT: present Found valid GPT wi...

Re: Installation freezes due to "Source ID xxxxx not found when attempting to remove it"

I've checked the integrity of the ISO file using the SHA256 checksum in the text file I got from the Linux website as well as the MD5 & SHA Checksum Utility for Windows and it's fine. Here's what I've tried so far: leave space unallocated, choose "Install Linux Mint alongside Windows 10" and have it...

Installation freezes due to "Source ID xxxxx not found when attempting to remove it"

Hey everyone, I've tried to install Linux Mint 18.3 in dual boot alongside Windows 10 on my Acer laptop. I disabled Fast Boot under Windows 10 and resized the partition Windows is on using GParted so I had 40 GB of free space. Then I booted the installation ISO from a USB drive and chose "Install Li...
