Re: Can I set some snapshots of timeshift to be never deleted?

I think O is original but it is immaterial, the O file is not deleted. You can have more than one O file.

Hibernating is not recommended for SSD drives as it uses a lot of write cycles.

This is old and outdated information.
Is this new ssd or new software? Most of my ssd are years old.

Re: Can I set some snapshots of timeshift to be never deleted?

If you initiated the backup timeshift will not delete it. Scheduled backups are deleted according to the number you set when you setup timeshift.

Re: Partitions at install

Hibernating is not recommended for SSD drives as it uses a lot of write cycles. I use a separate /home partition it enables reinstalling or upgrading without losing data.

Re: Monitor Problems with LM 20 Stable while BETA workes FLAWLESSLY.

I don't know what is causing the problem with your monitor, but you can go back to the beta if you still have the .iso file. Install again, if it works with your monitor then use timeshift to back up the OS. Install updates either a few at a time or just go for broke and see if it works. A fully upd...

Re: Ulyana + caffeine

The screensaver has settings for when it starts. I use xscreensaver to randomly display photographs. I also use a home made startup command to keep the screen from automatically blanking. Go to startup applications click on add. Name: noblank / Command: xset s 0 0 / Delay: 0 / Save Mint used to auto...

Re: broken dependencies tried to fix it but nothing works

You might want to try a straightforward

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove pips-sot30
Then try a reinstall. Maybe install/reinstall cups.

Re: can i increase the partition size of my root?

The install media (usb/dvd) that you used to install Mint will have a version of gparted. It is not installed but is available when the install media is booted. Boot from whatever you installed from and use gparted to resize your Mint partition. I don't know what effect it has on the boot process so...

Re: The volume "boot" has only 18.4 MB disk space remaining

Once your OS is installed and running you can delete the .deb files from

Code: Select all

/var/cache/apt/archives
I just installed Mint 20 and have over 600 MB in mine.

Re: How to resize root partition

You can't make any changes to a root partition that is in use. You must be booted from a USB/DVD edition of Mint for this to work. Be careful with gparted, it is a great utility but dangerous. You should have all your data backed up before trying this.

Re: secure boot key for LinuxMint 19.3

The os works to some degree. I suspect that any installed drivers will not work, I know that the Nvidia driver won't. Part of the problem is that I cannot install or reinstall the Nvidia driver with secure boot (SB) on. I was able to change to the open source video driver but it had no effect on the...

Re: secure boot key for LinuxMint 19.3

Thank you for the links. roblm does not like my VPN but I will check out the other links asap. This also points out why I want secure boot. Pure, unadulterated, paranoia. More secure is better than less secure. I know it works because if I install Mint with secure boot on it works fine, and that is ...

Re: secure boot key for LinuxMint 19.3

Rather than posing an XY problem, why don't you tell us what the real problem is. You know, the problem you're trying to solve. The indication is that video is stuck in 1024x768 my monitor is not recognized and "Displays" will not change anything. Driver manager will not let me update or change the...

secure boot key for LinuxMint 19.3

I recently updated my BIOS, how do I install the secure boot key for my version of Mint? I know I can reinstall the OS but that seems like overkill, there should be a way to install the required keys. System: Host: greybeard-System-Product-Name Kernel: 5.3.0-51-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc ...

Re: Problem(s) with my hard drives

That is not an error message. It is one of the parameters of /etc/fstab file. It is normal.
This only leaves the error message: "errors=remount-ro"
What is causing it?

Re: [Solved] Don't understand timeshift

Open File Manager. Click on File System in the left pane. One of the folders will be timeshift. Double-click that. Behold, snapshots. Not on my 19.3 Mate system. Timeshift is displayed on the left pane but clicking on it give me a "Could not display... the location is not a folder" Also, as expecte...

Re: [Solved] Don't understand timeshift

The amount of data shown by "Properties" is consistently 9.8GB in the timeshift directory and directories above. The volume/partition is not directly accessible. I'm sure there is a way through the terminal but I don't know it. Gparted shows 48.5GB. All this is with just the original backup file. Wh...

Re: [Solved] Don't understand timeshift

That probably does include Thunderbird and Firefox caches. It's about what I expected that is one reason I was confused about the results of properties in the browse menu of Timeshift. Looking at it now it still reads about 10.5 GB but it may only be reading the system files. When I get another dail...

Re: Don't understand timeshift

OK I think I have it figured out. I deleted one of the daily snapshots and the total disk usage went down about 3 GB. I deleted all the snapshots and started over with a master snapshot and it is just over 48 GB and verified by gparted. That is probably the right size as I have a lot of hidden files...

Re: Don't understand timeshift

pbear Do you have a lot of Flatpak, Snaps, or AppImages? Did you fiddle with the settings? For comparison, I'm keeping four weekly and five daily, with space used (per GParted) just over 20 GB. Have a flash drive with manual backups going back seven months (age takes much more space than number) and...
