Re: HP Compaq 6715b

I concur you should try 18.3 Xfce, as that's what I've been running on a slightly older relative of your laptop, nc6400 (until it gave its last breath recently). My main issue on it was extremely weak graphics - intel's GMA950 doesn't cover even basic web browsing nowadays. You should be secured on ...

Re: google earth problem

I apologize, My "Google Earth" was the "sattelite view" on Google Maps, I am unsure if Google Earth is substantially different. My mistake. It's a standalone application, it generally performs better on older hardware (especially version 6). It also has more features which I believe (not 100% sure ...

Re: google earth problem

For future reference: The linux .deb installers are actually still on google earth download server, even though not linked on the page anymore. No need to use 3rd party uploads. For 7.1.8 I recommend using the non-pro version if there's any issues with Pro. In my case, in the 7.1.8 Pro version 3D ma...

Re: Linux Mint 18.1 codenamed “Serena”

Also looking forward to it, as I'm waiting for 18.1 to do a full reinstall, since upgrading from 17.3 to 18 kinda broke my system a litte  (still usable though so I'm living with it). Good news :)

Re: THE MINT CAFE

I sold it to a 200 year old young lady in 2410 who installed MInt 86 on it and went to visit her ancestors in 2130. It was in great shape, only had 45,000 years on the ageometer. Have you by any chance checked if Mint 86 still supports our current hardware  ? I'm not really too keen on upgradi...

(...) I can't believe so many noobs are running the betas and it's not actiuvely discouraged. Maybe there just aren't enough really experienced users? Gee I don't know, I suppose I'm a noob when it comes to Mint, but I didn't have any problems with LM 18 Cinnamon or Xfce betas. I thought I had in t...

Re: Just giving LM18.0 xfec beta a whirl - loving it!

Replaced it with 17.3 for now, was hoping it'll solve my laptop lid problems but unfortunately it didn't. The Display Preferences popup is a Xfce bug, I "solved" it by removing "XF86Display" keyboard shortcut. The random crashes on closing lid seem to be some Mint problem, I think it happened when I...

Re: Automatic login is failing

I can confirm that I experience the problem on both of my machines, only timed auto-login works correctly. I have tested that only with cinnamon, but having read your posts I assume the flavor doesn't matter. I use ufw too, but tbh I don't really need the autologin feature to the extent that I'd con...

Re: Have Linux Mint 18 on a USB stick (Not on harddisk)

Actually on my #2 pc I have mint & grub installed on an USB stick, and the bios set to boot to usb first, works fine for me(even if a bit slow as it's USB 2.0 stick) If I have the stick plugged in, it boots to grub where I can choose between Mint and Windows, and if I boot the PC without the USB sti...

Re: Xfce 18?

In July's monthly news on blog Clem wrote that
The Xfce edition is almost ready. Some of the last bug fixes got in the repository today and we’re getting ready for a stable release.
So perhaps that is what we're looking at, at community.linuxmint.com, a stable rc?

edit: fixed a typo

Re: Question: Why the C syntax in programming?

Personally, I think you've at least partially answered your own question, (...) Also, the developers at Bell labs liked terse commands. They did not like typing much.(...) Which is true for most programmers. The other answer is how well it implements structured programming, everything organized and ...

Re: Just giving LM18.0 xfec beta a whirl - loving it!

So far so good, the only thing that I needed to change were the things mentioned by Pjotr - it seems to annoy more people so probably a thing to change in the stable release. Another problem I had with my laptop I reported on blog but it got deleted, so guess it's not considered a bug (or maybe my d...

Re: Xfce 18?

I'm sorry what I meant was Load stable Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon. Then add the XFCE desktop files with the Software manager. Then when you log in select XFCE instead of Cinnamon. I'm very new to this so I guess you could also be saying that the difference between Cinnamon and XFCE is much more that ju...

Re: Xfce 18?

Why can't you just install Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon Stable and then use the Software Manager to install XFCE? Because running more than one DE in a session can make for special kinds of chaos, not to mention resource-management issues if you are running an underpowered system. Oh boy, reminds me of t...

Have you tried anything from the link I posted above?
But yes, it seems to be a problem with old (LGA775 era) Gigabyte mobos and USB booting.

Re: [Mint 18] Laptop freezes randomly with nvidia but not intel card

Do you have any other system installed that runs fine? USB/DVD installer Live works ok? If the answer to any of those is no then it kinda feels like some hardware issue, perhaps overheating or malfunctioning RAM? (you can run memtest from installer media). Perhaps the nvidia chip might be faulty? Or...
