Re: How to bring terminal colors back to the way they were in Mint 18?

I wish I could be on Linux exclusively, but I can't. There is some stuff that will only run on Windows, or that might run on Wine, but breaks often enough for me to not have time to tinker with it manually, so I do a dual boot and run both instead. If you don't mind my asking, do you have formal edu...

Re: How to bring terminal colors back to the way they were in Mint 18?

Thank you rene! But does anything change if I'm using Mate instead of Cinnamon? The installation of Mint that you fixed was Mint 19 Mate 64-bit. I believe I saw slight differences between your lines and mine, so I copied and pasted the Mint 18.3 block to be safe, and it worked. By the way, how do yo...

Re: HOW TO change graphics drivers on installed LM19 from within a live usb?

I don't know if there's a simple guide, but I pieced this together from a lot of Googling and testing. If anyone has any corrections to this unprofessional and informal mini-guide, please don't hesitate to correct me, because I'm likely missing something important. :D For most systems, the basic pro...

Re: HOW TO change graphics drivers on installed LM19 from within a live usb?

As for ppas, you could save that specific directory and then copy back after the install. If you have a separate /home, then most of your program setting are saved in the .<configname> files in your /home/<username> directory. these "invisible" files are an important part of your system configurati...

Re: Grub boot menu always shows

That grub-common update doesn't sound like a big deal, but what if I do something similar to what JeremyB suggested, but not exactly the same? After reading his first post, I did some research and found this article: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Setup In particular, this section stood out...

Re: Grub boot menu always shows

Looks like this basically changes quick_boot=1 to quick_boot=0 in /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober.

If I upgrade the kernel or do some other operating system update, do I have to do anything special after this change?

Re: Grub boot menu always shows

I never had a second os in the grub menu though. My boot order is VeraCrypt's boot loader first, then grub if I press Esc. Windows never shows up in grub. In case it is important, I have grub installed on a /boot partition that is separate from the efi system partition. I'm a bit confused now. Shoul...

Re: Grub boot menu always shows

Will this break anything? By the way, here's how the same lines look on my working system (but it's MBR instead of GPT): GRUB_DEFAULT=0 GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=0 GRUB_TIMEOUT=30 Is there a meaningful difference between the 2 grub files that could be causing the different beha...

Re: HOW TO change graphics drivers on installed LM19 from within a live usb?

How do you reinstall everything so quickly? The actual installation of the operating system takes only minutes, I know. But what about reinstallation of the programs? It takes me ages to set them all up the way I want. There are ppas, and specific settings within each program too. There is no practi...

Re: Grub boot menu always shows

Yes, it is in fact a dual boot right now. A very complicated one. There is an installation of Windows 10 on the drive encrypted with VeraCrypt. Mint itself is a LUKS-inside-LVM separately encrypted installation. The operating systems are spread across two different drives. One is an SSD and one is a...

Yes, I have run it many times. The menu has always been there. Those lines I listed were not a recent change. They just represent what is in my file now.

Grub boot menu always shows

On one of my computers with Mint 19, the Grub boot menu always shows up. I want it to select the default option unless I press Shift before it boots up. How can I accomplish this? My /etc/default/grub file shows these lines: GRUB_DEFAULT=0 GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden GRUB_TIMEOUT=0 Is there something ...

Re: [Solved] Screen resolution messed up after BIOS update

Do you happen to know if someone has already filed a bug report for the Driver Manager bug, or if I can help with that? I have a separate thread here for the Driver Manager problem because the problem seemed too unrelated to my original video resolution problem in this thread. Here is the separate t...

Re: HOW TO change graphics drivers on installed LM19 from within a live usb?

Well, I can confirm that installing packages do indeed fix at least some video driver problems. I recently had an indirectly related problem that you can read about here if you are interested: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=284091 I say it is "indirectly related" because it is not...

Driver Manager bug? ("continue using a manually installed driver")

Has anyone experienced a bug in Mint 19's Driver Manager (Mate 64-bit, if it happens to be important) in which they cannot switch to an alternative driver? My system has 2 possible options for the Driver Manager: nvidia and nouveau. I was able to switch from nouveau (the default) to nvidia once, to ...

[Solved] Screen resolution messed up after BIOS update

So, I recently updated the BIOS on my computer. Right after the update, I found that when booting into Linux, my resolution was stuck at 1024x768. I didn't realize what had caused this at first, but when even restoring a TimeShift image failed, I knew it was likely something outside of the operating...

Re: HOW TO change graphics drivers on installed LM19 from within a live usb?

I believe the original poster is referring to a situation in which the original system has become unbootable. I have personally encountered a situation in which I used Driver Manager in a working installation of Mint, then found Mint unbootable. TimeShift may be one possible solution to this problem...

Re: [Solved] Mint 19 Mate: Screen goes to sleep and never wakes up

I hope you find a solution! It was days of utter frustration for me. I had already installed Mint 18 on the system before I found out why Wi-Fi wasn't working. Even then I planned to work around the problem by compiling a driver for it, but then I realized sound was broken as well. At that point I g...

Re: [Solved] Mint 19 Mate: Screen goes to sleep and never wakes up

That's a good point. Strictly speaking, the original problem was indeed solved, or at least worked around, so I'll just let the topic end here. It would be nice to get nouveau working as well, but I honestly don't have the time to deal with another reinstall right now should something go wrong. I ma...
