Re: Why is computer fan blowing & overheating in "suspend"??

Most computers will cook if running in a small enclosed space. You're lucky it didn't appear to do any damage as overheating in similar circumstances contributed to the demise of one of my netbooks. It's not just the open aplications which need to be stored in swap when the machine hibernates, it's...

Re: Why is computer fan blowing & overheating in "suspend"??

monitor your temps closely. I have had over-heating issues on both laptops i run Mint on, one is manageable (max 70-80 degrees C), the other got so hot it auto-shutdown at 102 degrees C! That laptop eventually died. So proceed with caution and investigate your temps situation. @ZakG: Thanks for the...

Re: Why is computer fan blowing & overheating in "suspend"??

Your xsession errors file doesn't show anything too bad. If teh server locks up, you get an endless loop and a massive file with lines and lines of text. My knowledge of Macs is limited, I yield the floor to those more experienced. @mr_raider: Thanks for the follow up; indeed, "generally" things ar...

Re: Why is computer fan blowing & overheating in "suspend"??

One possibility, which I am not sure how to check, is that you closed the laptop up and thereby put LM to sleep. If for some reason it woke back up and tried to hibernate instead, it would not have been able to copy the RAM image out to your swap area because it is too small. So the two questions a...

Swap is only half the size of RAM. @MrEen: OK, possibly . . . I did add RAM a year or so back, but I didn't adjust the SWAP due to la...

Re: Why is computer fan blowing & overheating in "suspend"??

Following up on the latest developments, still my question about whether any of these "internal" problems to Linux MInt would effect the battery levels, while logged out of LM and booted into OSX??? But logged out . . . . So in the mean time I was finally able to use the console to run the updates t...

Re: Why is computer fan blowing & overheating in "suspend"??

All files in *nix whose name begins with a "." are hidden in the sense that the ls command won't show them without adding the -a switch. In a terminal try ls versus ls -a in your home directory. With the -a you will see a bunch of extra files, including .xsession-errors, but knowing that it is ther...

Re: Why is computer fan blowing & overheating in "suspend"??

.xsession-errors A hidden file in your home directory OK. I searched my home folder and the filesystem with those terms and it says "file not found" . . . so clearly it is "hidden" . . . but then how do we "un-hide" these non-visibles? I clicked on a few things like "Xsession" itself and got a "how...

Re: Why is computer fan blowing & overheating in "suspend"??

X server might be locking up. Check your xession errors file. OK. thanks for the suggestion; I did find "Xsession" "read only" file . . . nothing labeled as "errors" . . . . I tried a few commands in console, but obviously don't have the right questions. I see listed an "ERRFILE=$HOME/.xsession-err...

Re: Why is computer fan blowing & overheating in "suspend"??

Please post output of inxi -Fxz To get the hardware details. Thanks for the reply, doesn't seem to show too much about the "health" of the data, but here it is: ~ $ inxi -Fxz System: Host: nonspace3-MacBookPro Kernel: 4.10.0-32-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.4.0) Desktop: MATE 1.18.0 (Gtk 3.18.9-1ub...

Why is computer fan blowing & overheating in "suspend"??

Folks: Bit of an emergency type situation, spent some time this afternoon running LM 18.2 MATE to do some linux downloads, and tried to use Update manager to do a few updates, that kept failing due to "inability to connect to 'python3' . . . " or something like that; also tried it in Terminal, which...

Re: How to "dist-upgrade" the kernel in LM18?

Continuing saga on the "Updater" vs console for updates/upgrades . . . today, booting Mint the Updater shows a number of packages to update, including a kernel . . . all of which I installed via Updater. I rebooted and refreshed the updates and nothing showed--"your system is up to date." Again, for...

Re: How to "dist-upgrade" the kernel in LM18?

et al: Following up on the latest update on this thread and the interface with the Updater to get kernel updates . . . . Since I last posted here I switched over to using the Updater to handle the system upgrades . . . and all was "fine" until maybe a month or so back when attempting to upgrade what...

Re: Mint 18: Kernel updates only in GUI Update Manager?

BTW, if you have multiple systems but you don't want to install a management framework (... I agree, it's a bit of an "overkill" ...) you could use something like "Cluster SSH". You'd perform 1 x SSH login to multiple systems at once and then issue the same command to them at the same time. Tutoria...

Re: How to "dist-upgrade" the kernel in LM18?

thank you very much. You're very welcome. Here in the Linux Mint forum, we consider all Linux users to be "real" Linux users, no matter whether they prefer the GUI or the CLI. Beginners or gurus, it doesn't matter, all are welcome. That's the spirit of this forum. Please keep that in mind. @Moem: I...

Re: Mint 18: Kernel updates only in GUI Update Manager?

@scorp123: Appreciate the reply and the links, I'll have to read over it a few times, from quick read it looks like they are more for server upgrades across a number of machines?? So. obviously using the console would reduce the work load tremendously . . . . For my personal uses on a couple compute...

Re: How to "dist-upgrade" the kernel in LM18?

@scorp: Very true . . . the console can be more "efficient" . . . that is what is being stated here . . . over and over. It seems to be clear from what the mods are implying with their general attitude to my question is that Clem is NOT going to re-visit this Updater only for kernel upgrades idea . ...

Re: How to "dist-upgrade" the kernel in LM18?

I actually think that dist-upgrade will not update a kernel in LM18 as the package used for the kernel and headers is still at 4.4.0-21 @JeremyB: That's what I'm reporting, that dist-upgrade will not update the kernel in LM18 . . . but in 17 I believe it still did that. Thanks for the suggested dry...

Re: How to "dist-upgrade" the kernel in LM18?

the traditional . . . very simple "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" brings historically the relevant upgrades . . . including basic kernel updates . . . and also generally in LM it all goes well . . . . Have to say I'm with Manta and wharfrat on this one, why degrade sudo power for those who are used to ...

Re: How to "dist-upgrade" the kernel in LM18?

I would use the Synaptic Package Manager and search for installed Packages with linux in the name and see which one includes the kernel image and headers. Post the result here @JeremyB: OK, I checked synaptic with your request, although I'm not sure why using synaptic is any different than using Up...
