Censorship on the forum

I believe that some people involved in this forum are "censoring" posts based on the sensibilities of their nationality, not for honest reasons. It needs to stop. Linux and Linux Mint are international communities. Just because you and your neighbours don't approve of other people's talk, you don't ...

Re: In light of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, I finally deleted my Facebook account. Here are my thoughts on the matt

Perhaps we should look at the whole concept of pre-configured, pre-programmed social networks. Surely letting some unknown person(s) put it "all together" is just asking for trouble? Do we want more from our computers/internet/phones than they are capable of giving us in a reasonably secure form? Ar...

Re: Any text on the screen is missing characters

On the same note, in the early '70s, the vaunted Time magazine did a story on Toronto and "Rochdale College", along these lines: "There's a 6 square block area in downtown Toronto that, by all accounts, has more psychoactive drugs available than the entire rest of the world" Man, downtown Toronto in...

Re: Any text on the screen is missing characters

WindowPane!!??
I haven't heard that in 45 years, man.
Where did that come from? Do I know you?...lol lol HA HA HA

If you've ever heard of Toronto's "Rochdale College" from the '60s you'll know where I come from.

Re: Any text on the screen is missing characters

You won't believe this. In some confusion, I changed the kernel to 4.4.0-116 (sic), but it did not affect the missing characters. Then, still confused, I reset, in Settings > Fonts, both "Hinting' and "Aliasing" to "None" Again, nothing happened. But... Lo! and Behold!... About an hour we were actua...

Re: Any text on the screen is missing characters

Absolutely, Pjotr. Thanks again. The other answers explained what was happening with the scripts, but your solution of rolling back the kernel was exactly what was needed for everything so far, except the firewall issue. I'm going to let that one go, and rely on my router's firewall, until I learn m...

Re: Any text on the screen is missing characters

Yeah, I guess so.
But it's a different machine (the Revered Spousal Unit's) with a different sort of issue, other than the samba/firewall one. After the other stuff I thought a fresh thread would be better, because you gave me a lot of encouragement.

[Solved]Any text on the screen is missing characters

18.3 Sylvia, Intel mb/graphics After a few minutes, most of the characters on the screen disappear; but they come back while the cursor hovers over them Nothing in this thread helped. viewtopic.php?f=208&t=191890 It also happened on that box with Ubuntu Mate, which we couldn't fix, and now it's star...

Re: Scripts don't run

OK. I changed the kernel tp 4.4.0-116 as Pjotr said , and now all the scripts I was trying to learn with are working. Thanking you loads, sir. Flemur, WharfRat, with you're explanations I might be starting to get a handle on bash scripting. :D :D (It's hard to learn to do things when your system see...

Re: Frustration is maxing out / needing encouragement

Pjotr, I know you don't approve of Grub-Customizer; could you tell me how to take those kernels out of grub2 ? And after doing step 3, the resultant output of inxi -G : devlin@MainBox ~ $ inxi -G Graphics: Card: Intel 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller Display Server...

Re: Scripts don't run

devlin@MainBox ~ $ ./Script-Starter.sh test_script File test_script is now an executable and ready to be edited. devlin@MainBox ~ $ cat test_script #!/bin/bash devlin@MainBox ~ $ Seems to have worked, this time. But I had just reverted the kernel back to 4.4 as per Pjotr in viewtopic.php?p=1448266#...
