... It seems dumb to have both versions of Wine installed, but apparently I do and I had the same setup before, when my Office apps worked... ... That's the whole idea for PlayOnLinux. You can select a different Wine version for a particular program that you know will work with that version. Cool. ...

Re: PlayOnLinux apps lost Internet access?

It seems dumb to have both versions of Wine installed, but apparently I do and I had the same setup before, when my Office apps worked... I think POL does that - I've never used POL and don't know much about it. One thing that keeps me from wanting to just download and install all the latest is tha...

Re: PlayOnLinux apps lost Internet access?

I figured out how to run iexplorer, and it comes up and works fine. I ran iexplorer from the command line. I tried running Outlook and Word the same way and they got the same errors they have been getting. You already did the other stuff I'd suggest: "deleted the .wine and .PlayOnLinux folders from...

Re: PlayOnLinux apps lost Internet access?

I cannot figure out what is going on or what happened to break my install and is now keeping it broken. Is it possibly the latest kernel? Have you tried the previous (working?) kernel? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! A more common problem is *preventnig* wine programs from accessing the inte...

PlayOnLinux apps lost Internet access?

I am running Mint 18.1 w/Cinnamon. Kernel 4.4.0-128. I have had PlayOnLinux running MS Office 2010 for a year or two now and it has been fine. I keep my system updated with all patches that Software Manager shows as available. I also have VirtualBox running with a guest VM that is Windows 7 and also...

Re: Building new Mint desktop machine - Do's and Don'ts?

Unless you actually need the Starship Enterprise for production or for work I've always considered buying the 'best of the current best' a waste of money ( unless you're made of it :) ) That pretty well describes me, too. But, I don't game at all. My needs are to run a few different VMs at once. I'...

Re: Building new Mint desktop machine - Do's and Don'ts?

RAM for the PC for your virtual machines, depends on what you're running and how many at a time obviously but RAM can get gobbled up pretty quickly when you're running 3 operating systems, minimum requirement is about 2GB for each one, comfortable 3GB. You can get away with a single 8GB stick but b...

Re: Building new Mint desktop machine - Do's and Don'ts?

Coffee Lake intel cpu's won't really be an option until Mint 19 is released, maybe June. You'll need the 4.15 kernel. You can however run right now ubuntu 18.04 beta ( its pretty stable, I've not had issues ). So if you're happy running ubuntu for a few months no problem. Definitely go for a Nividi...

Building new Mint desktop machine - Do's and Don'ts?

I'm thinking about buying or building myself a new desktop machine to run Mint and be my main workstation. Currently, I have a Dell laptop that I am using. It's in a docking station with 2 monitors, and a real keyboard and mouse, I never take it out of the dock, so I'm thinking why go to a new lapto...

Re: After todays update-->inictl: Unable to connect to Upstart

I have Mint 18.1 with kernel 4.4 and VirtualBox 5.0. After today's update, my system would not start X. I could only login to the command line. This: If you need to remove these packages to get into the system and want to keep virtualbox try sudo apt-get remove virtualbox-guest* got me going again. ...

[LM18.1] After updates, X won't start

I've been running Mint 18.1 for a while. It's on a Dell Precision M6400 laptop with an nVidia graphics card. It lives in a docking station and I use 2 external monitors with the laptop lid normally closed. Today, Update Manager (right name?) said I had some updates available. I noticed that 2 of the...

Re: Cinnamon vertical panels annoyance

For the window list I would never place them into a vertical panel. I am software developer for a living (for the last 30 years). I first started working on Unix when it was called Ultrix and ran on a DEC MicroVAX..... Ultrix was a failed spin of Unix by DEC. It debuted in 1984, more than 10 years ...

Drupal 8?

I'm running LM18.1. I want to install Drupal 8 locally to match a production site I have hosted elsewhere that is running Drupal 8. Software Manager only shows Drupal 7. If I download and install Drupal 8 directly from Drupal.org, will it work? I always assume if the latest version in Software Manag...

Re: Mouse clicks registering incorrectly

But, I don't see how that would have anything to do with a mouse click being posted to the desklet behind that window I clicked on. I am pretty sure that even if I am moving the mouse, it is not moving all the way out of the window and directly over the desklet in between when I click down and when...

Re: Mouse clicks registering incorrectly

Thanks, Cosmo. It is possible that I am moving the mouse a bit when I click on the window title. I have changed that threshold from 8 to 12. But, I don't see how that would have anything to do with a mouse click being posted to the desklet behind that window I clicked on. I am pretty sure that even ...
