Re: LMDE3: old Firefox: very slow update time, still on 60.3 and not on 64.x

Running LMDE 3, just named it wrong... sorry... but Betsy is still a friend of mine. ;) btw. In the repos even in LMDE 3/Cindy FF ESR named 60.3.0esr~linuxmint1 +betsy :P Yes, I don"t get the purpose of providing a specific mint package since Firefox ESR is already in Debian repos. I suggest to swi...

Re: chrome or firefox?

Chromium here. FireFox has issues with my bank webite, so rarely ever use it. No problems with Chromium. Sadly, first Google web domination issues.. Google leadership makes web conceptors follow its standards. I think the OP question should overtake single user comfort question. Honestly, question ...

Re: chrome or firefox?

Firefox only. I do not mind if Chrome is better or faster... I want to support Mozilla for its policy.

Nor Chrome neither Chromium. I want to get rid of Google. And I'm tired of all these Chromium-based browsers... Is this seriously the web future ?

Re: What kernel and headers I should to install in LMDE2?

Well, kernel upgrades are often problematic when using graphic card proprietary drivers.

But in my memories, catalyst driver was available from the Debian Jessie repos. Maybe this version is quite old for your harware ?

Re: What kernel and headers I should to install in LMDE2?

Yeah. I already boot the 3.16 kernel and remove the 4.9 kernel, and the Catalyst. I use the system a few hours as long while I was on other business and is perfectly stable with the 3.16. Now I go to install again the 4.9 and then the Catalyst. Ok, you should proceed step-by-step, and check before ...

Re: What kernel and headers I should to install in LMDE2?

I need to unistall the Catalyst and reinstall it?
Yes, proprietary driver may be the cause.

Can you still boot on kernel 3.16 ?

Re: What kernel and headers I should to install in LMDE2?

Just be aware that your current meta-packages "linux-image-amd64" and "linux-headers-amd64" are linked to kernel 3.16. It means that you should not upgrade these two packages if you still want to receive kernel 3.16 automatic security updates. Hmmm... although at first I was not interested in the u...

Re: Proper way to remove systemd as init in LMDE3?

There's this tuto:

But this looks risky. Maybe you should consider other SystemVinit distros like MX, Devuan, Calculate...

Re: LMDE2 and configuration for long term support

Hello,

If I'm not wrong wrong, LMDE2 sources list must be located in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/

If my memories are correct, it must be called something like "official repositories"...

Re: Firefox ESR 52.9 last one on Jessie (LMDE 2)?

In fact, two different Firefox-ESR builds are provided with LMDE2 (since Mint had replaced its Firefox release with ESR version).

Since mint team LMDE2 support will end soon, be sure to hold to Firefox ESR Debian packages (support until 2020).

Re: Installing Firefox ESR to LMDE 2

Yes, it took some time, but Firefox ESR 60 has arrived (at least...) in Debian Jessie repos.

Mint team had even provided its own Firefow ESR built since a few weeks.

It seems now safer to switch to Debian version, since it will probably get LTS support until 2020.

Re: Firefox ESR 52.9 last one on Jessie (LMDE 2)?

This is strange. Firefox ESR from debian repos is still in version 52.9...

https://packages.debian.org/fr/jessie/firefox-esr

Would that mean an update has replaced Firefox with its ESR version from betsy repositories ? What would be the purpose, considering LMDE support ends in three months ?

Re: How to upgrade from LMDE2 Mate to LMDE3 Mate

Zorzi, Thanks, but what is the best way to do this (LMDE2 Mate to LMDE3 Cinnamon) without loosing my data and programs from LMDE2 Mate? I do have enough space on my HDD to install LMDE3 Cinnamon so should I burn the LMDE3 disc and install it using the partition manager to add it alongside LMDE2 Mat...

Re: How to upgrade from LMDE2 Mae to LMDE3 Mate

Since there's no LMDE3 Mate but only LMDE3 Cinnamon, upgrade will be hard and risky.

The best thing to do would be a LMDE3 clean install, and then install Mate on the side of Cinnamon.

Isn't MATE 1.18 in the debian backports? Not sure if backports would be an issue in LMDE 3 or not.
Mate 1.20 is in Debian Stretch backports. LMDE3 is Stretch-based, so there should not be trouble to use backports.
